Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle and nerve function, blood sugar control, and blood pressure regulation. It is also critical for energy production and sleep quality.
Despite its importance, studies suggest that a significant portion of the population does not get enough magnesium from diet alone. This makes magnesium supplementation one of the most common and beneficial recommendations we made in our physical store.
Sleep Quality
Supports muscle relaxation and may help improve sleep quality and reduce nighttime restlessness. Magnesium glycinate is especially popular for this purpose.
Muscle Function
Helps with muscle relaxation and may reduce cramps and tension. Commonly used by athletes and active individuals.
Energy Production
Plays a key role in converting food into energy (ATP). Low magnesium levels are associated with fatigue.
Heart & Blood Pressure
Supports healthy blood pressure and heart rhythm. Often recommended alongside other cardiovascular nutrients.
Walk down the supplement aisle and you'll see eight different forms of magnesium — glycinate, citrate, oxide, malate, L-threonate, taurate — each marketed as the "best" one. The honest picture is more nuanced than the marketing: a comprehensive 2017 bioavailability review found that the type of magnesium salt matters less than commonly claimed — the dose and how consistently you take it matter more. That said, a few things about specific forms are well-documented.
Magnesium Glycinate — best for sleep and daily use
Gentle on the stomach and popular for sleep and anxiety, but part of its edge isn't magnesium absorption — it's the glycine it's bound to. Glycine is a calming amino acid in its own right, so you're getting two relaxation-supporting compounds at once. A reasonable default for daily, long-term supplementation.
Magnesium Citrate
A classic head-to-head trial found citrate substantially more soluble and better absorbed than oxide. Well-tolerated for most people, though higher doses can have a mild-to-moderate laxative effect — which is also why it's the form used in over-the-counter constipation products.
Magnesium Oxide — the cheap filler form
The most common form in cheap multivitamins and generic supplements, because it packs a lot of elemental magnesium by weight for a low cost. It's also the most poorly absorbed — the same head-to-head trial found it was virtually insoluble in water compared to citrate. If oxide is the only form listed on a label, you're likely getting less usable magnesium than the milligram number suggests.
Magnesium L-Threonate
Marketed specifically for brain and cognitive support, based on a 2010 study showing elevated brain magnesium improved learning and memory — but that foundational study was done in rats, not humans. It's a genuinely interesting compound, but the brain-specific marketing claims are ahead of the human evidence. It's also usually the most expensive form per gram of elemental magnesium.

- Start with 200mg and increase if needed
Magnesium is cleared from your body by the kidneys. If you have chronic kidney disease, impaired kidneys can't excrete excess magnesium as efficiently, which raises real risk of magnesium buildup (hypermagnesemia). A 2023 review found magnesium administration in CKD patients can be done safely under medical supervision and monitoring — this isn't a blanket "never," but it does mean talking to your doctor first rather than self-supplementing if you have kidney disease.
Magnesium can also reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics — tetracyclines (like doxycycline) and fluoroquinolones (like ciprofloxacin) bind to magnesium in the gut, which lowers how much antibiotic actually gets absorbed. If you're on one of these, space your magnesium dose at least 2-3 hours apart from the antibiotic.
Higher doses of citrate or oxide forms can cause diarrhea or GI upset in people not used to them — if that happens, lowering the dose or switching to glycinate usually resolves it.
Magnesium is well-established for its role in muscle and nerve function. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis found that magnesium supplementation reduced the time it takes to fall asleep in older adults with insomnia. Deficiency is common in modern diets.
What to look for
- The elemental magnesium amount clearly listed — not just the total weight of the compound (e.g., a bottle listing "1000mg magnesium citrate" may only contain around 150mg of actual elemental magnesium)
- A single, named form (glycinate, citrate, etc.) rather than a vague "magnesium complex" that doesn't disclose the ratio
- 200-400mg of elemental magnesium per serving, matching the typical supplemental range
- Third-party testing or a reputable manufacturer, especially for less common forms like threonate where price premiums are highest
Red flags
- A "magnesium blend" or "complex" where oxide is the first (and cheapest) ingredient listed, padding the total mg number without much absorbable magnesium
- Labels that only show the compound weight, making it impossible to tell how much elemental magnesium you're actually getting
- A high price premium for L-threonate marketed with brain/cognitive claims that outrun the human evidence
- No indication anywhere of which specific form(s) are in the product
