L-Theanine is an amino acid primarily found in green tea (Camellia sinensis). It is known for promoting a state of "calm alertness" — reducing stress and anxiety without causing drowsiness. It works by increasing alpha brain waves and modulating neurotransmitters like GABA, dopamine, and serotonin.
L-Theanine is one of the most popular nootropics for people who want focus without the jitters of caffeine alone. It is also commonly used in the evening to support relaxation and sleep quality.
Calm Focus
Promotes a state of relaxed alertness. Many people report improved focus and concentration without feeling overstimulated.
Stress Reduction
May help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Works quickly (within 30–60 minutes) for many people.
Sleep Quality
May improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation. Does not cause next-day drowsiness for most people.
Generally Well Tolerated
L-Theanine is very safe with an excellent safety profile. It is non-habit forming and well-tolerated by most people.
- Works synergistically with caffeine (try 200mg L-Theanine + 100mg caffeine)
- Can be taken with or without food
- Great stacked with Magnesium or Ashwagandha
- Effects are felt within 30–60 minutes
Multiple studies support L-Theanine's ability to promote relaxation without sedation and improve attention when combined with caffeine. A 2012 randomized controlled trial found that caffeine and L-theanine, both individually, significantly reduced errors during a sustained attention task compared to placebo. It is one of the most researched nootropic amino acids.
