Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom known for its unique appearance — resembling a white lion's mane. It has been used traditionally in East Asian medicine and is now popular in the West as a nootropic (cognitive enhancer).
Research has focused on its potential to support nerve growth factor (NGF), which plays a role in the growth and maintenance of nerve cells. This makes it a favorite among people looking for natural cognitive support.
Cognitive Function
May support memory, focus, and overall cognitive performance. Some studies show benefits for mild cognitive impairment.
Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)
Research suggests Lion's Mane may stimulate the production of NGF, which supports the growth and repair of nerve cells.
Mood Support
Some studies show benefits for mood and reduction of mild anxiety and depression symptoms.
Generally Well Tolerated
Lion's Mane is considered very safe. Most people tolerate it well with minimal side effects.
- Look for dual-extracted, organic products
- Effects build over time — be patient
- Great stacked with Omega-3 and L-Theanine
- Choose fruiting body extracts when possible
Lion's Mane has shown promising results in small human studies for cognitive function and nerve growth factor. A 2009 double-blind placebo-controlled trial in older adults with mild cognitive impairment found significant improvements in cognitive scores after 16 weeks of supplementation, though benefits diminished after stopping use. Larger clinical trials are still needed, but early research is encouraging.
How Lion's Mane Compares
| Ingredient | Best For | Key Difference |

| Lion's Mane | Cognitive function, NGF | Mushroom; effects build over weeks |
| Bacopa Monnieri | Memory, Learning | Herb; effects take 4–6 weeks |
| L-Theanine | Calm focus (fast-acting) | Amino acid; works within 30–60 min |
Lion's Mane is often stacked with Omega-3 and L-Theanine for synergistic cognitive support.
