Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are essential fats that your body cannot produce on its own. They are primarily found in fatty fish and algae. EPA and DHA play critical roles in brain function, heart health, and controlling inflammation.
Most people in Western diets consume far too many omega-6 fats and not enough omega-3s. This imbalance is one of the reasons we strongly recommended omega-3 supplementation to many of our customers in the physical store.
Brain Health
DHA is a major structural component of the brain. Research suggests adequate omega-3 intake supports cognitive function and may benefit mood.
Heart Health
EPA and DHA support healthy triglyceride levels, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular function.
Inflammation Support
May help promote a healthy inflammatory response throughout the body.
Generally Well Tolerated
High-quality fish oil and algae oil are very safe when taken at recommended doses. Choose third-party tested brands (IFOS 5-star rated).
Beyond the fish-oil-vs-algae-oil choice, the chemical form your omega-3 is bound in changes how much of it your body actually absorbs. Most bottles don't advertise this clearly, but it's one of the bigger differences between a cheap product and a well-made one.
Triglyceride (TG) & Re-esterified Triglyceride (rTG)
This is the natural form omega-3s exist in inside fish and algae. A 6-month randomized trial found re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) — fish oil concentrated and then converted back into triglyceride form — produced a bigger increase in blood omega-3 levels and actually lowered fasting triglycerides, while an identical dose of ethyl ester did not. Standard (non-re-esterified) triglyceride fish oil is a solid middle-ground choice.
Ethyl Ester (EE) — the budget form
The most common form in cheap, mass-market fish oil, because it's easier and cheaper to manufacture at high concentration. It's also the least well absorbed of the common forms — your gut has to work harder to convert it back into a usable form before absorption. If a label doesn't mention the form at all, it's often ethyl ester.
Phospholipid Form (Krill Oil)
Krill oil binds omega-3s to phospholipids rather than triglycerides, which some research suggests may improve absorption per milligram. It's genuinely well-absorbed, but krill oil products typically deliver far less total EPA+DHA per serving than fish oil at a noticeably higher price — check the actual EPA+DHA milligrams, not just the serving size.
- Store in the fridge to prevent oxidation
- Take with a meal containing fat
- Choose triglyceride form (not ethyl ester) for better absorption
- Algae oil is excellent for vegetarians/vegans
The "fish oil thins your blood" warning is more overstated than the reputation suggests. A systematic review of 52 studies found fish oil reduces platelet aggregation in healthy people, but did not translate into increased bleeding or blood transfusions in surgical patients — the review didn't support stopping fish oil before surgery. Still, if you're on prescription blood thinners, mention your fish oil intake to your doctor rather than assuming it's automatically fine.
The more genuinely important caution is dose-related: a 2021 meta-analysis of large cardiovascular trials found omega-3 supplementation carried a real, dose-dependent increase in atrial fibrillation risk — a 25% relative increase overall, rising to about 49% in trials using more than 1g/day, mostly seen in people with existing cardiovascular risk factors. This mainly applies to high-dose, pharmaceutical-strength omega-3, not the standard 1-2g/day range on this page, but it's a real reason to talk to your doctor before going well above that.
If you have a fish or shellfish allergy, algae-based omega-3 is the safer choice over fish oil.
Decades of research support the cardiovascular and cognitive benefits of EPA and DHA. A 2022 meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials in nearly 137,000 participants found that omega-3 supplementation was associated with a lower risk of major cardiovascular events and cardiac death, though no significant benefit was seen for all-cause mortality.
What to look for
- The actual EPA+DHA milligrams per serving listed clearly — not just the total "fish oil" or "fish oil concentrate" weight, which includes other fats that aren't omega-3
- The form disclosed on the label (triglyceride, rTG, or ethyl ester) — if it's not mentioned, assume ethyl ester
- Third-party testing, ideally IFOS 5-star certification, which verifies purity, potency, and freshness (oxidation/TOTOX level)
- A recent manufacture date and opaque or dark packaging, since omega-3s oxidize with light and time exposure
Red flags
- A large "1000mg fish oil" number on the front with no EPA+DHA breakdown — often only 300mg or less of that is actual omega-3
- A strong fishy smell or taste straight from the bottle, which usually signals oxidized (rancid) oil, not just "normal fish oil smell"
- No mention of sourcing, testing, or oxidation levels anywhere on the label or website
- Krill oil priced per bottle similarly to fish oil, without disclosing it delivers far less total EPA+DHA per serving
