Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. It plays critical roles in immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, protein production, and hormone regulation (including testosterone and thyroid hormones).
Zinc deficiency is relatively common, especially among older adults, vegetarians, and those with digestive issues. In our physical store, zinc was one of the most frequently recommended minerals for immune support and overall wellness.
Immune Support
Essential for proper immune cell function. Research suggests adequate zinc levels support healthy immune response, especially during cold and flu season.
Wound Healing & Skin
Critical for collagen synthesis and wound healing. Often used topically and orally for skin health.
Hormone Health
Supports healthy testosterone levels and thyroid function. Important for reproductive health in both men and women.
Generally Well Tolerated
Zinc is safe at recommended doses. High doses can cause nausea and interfere with copper absorption.
Zinc supplements come bound to different compounds, and the difference genuinely affects absorption — this isn't marketing noise.
Zinc Picolinate
A classic double-blind crossover trial in 15 healthy adults found zinc picolinate significantly raised hair, urine, and red blood cell zinc levels after 4 weeks, while equal doses of zinc citrate and zinc gluconate produced no significant change at all. It's one of the few forms with real head-to-head human absorption data behind it.
Zinc Bisglycinate (Glycinate)
Chelated to the amino acid glycine, well-absorbed and generally the gentlest form on the stomach. A solid everyday choice, especially if picolinate causes any GI discomfort.
Zinc Gluconate / Acetate — the cold-lozenge forms
Not the best absorbed for general daily supplementation, but these are the specific forms used in most of the clinical trials behind zinc lozenges shortening cold duration — the lozenge works by direct contact with throat tissue, not primarily through systemic absorption, so the usual bioavailability ranking doesn't apply the same way here.
Zinc Oxide — the cheap filler form
Common in cheap multivitamins because it's inexpensive and packs a lot of elemental zinc by weight, but it's poorly absorbed. If oxide is the only form listed on a supplement label, you're likely getting less usable zinc than the milligram number implies. (This is different from topical zinc oxide in sunscreen or diaper cream, which works by sitting on the skin, not by being absorbed.)

- Long-term high doses may deplete copper — consider a multi-mineral
Never use nasal zinc products. The FDA warned in 2009 that zinc-containing nasal gels and swabs were linked to over 130 reports of anosmia (permanent loss of smell), sometimes after a single use. This is specific to zinc contacting the nasal passages — oral lozenges, capsules, and tablets don't carry this particular risk.
Chronic high-dose use can cause copper deficiency — zinc and copper compete for absorption, and case reports have documented serious, sometimes only partially reversible neurological damage (numbness, weakness, difficulty walking) from long-term excess zinc intake. The classic cases involved zinc-containing denture cream used in large amounts daily, but the same mechanism applies to unsupervised long-term high-dose zinc supplementation. Don't exceed 40mg/day long-term without medical supervision, and consider a multi-mineral with copper if you're supplementing zinc regularly.
Zinc can also reduce absorption of certain antibiotics (tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones) if taken at the same time, the same chelation mechanism seen with magnesium — space your zinc dose 2-3 hours apart from these medications.
Zinc is one of the most studied minerals for immune function. A 2024 Cochrane review found that zinc may reduce the duration of common colds when taken after symptoms begin, and supports overall immune health, especially in people who are deficient.
What to look for
- The elemental zinc amount clearly listed — not just the total weight of the compound (e.g., "50mg zinc gluconate" contains far less than 50mg of actual zinc)
- A named form (picolinate, bisglycinate, citrate) rather than a vague "zinc complex" that doesn't disclose the ratio
- An oral capsule, tablet, or lozenge — never a nasal spray or gel
- 15-30mg elemental zinc per serving, matching the standard supplemental range
Red flags
- Any zinc nasal gel, spray, or swab product — regardless of brand, given the documented anosmia risk
- Zinc oxide listed as the primary (or only) form in a "premium" or high-priced product
- High-dose zinc products (well above 40mg) with no copper included and no caution about long-term use
- Labels that only show the compound weight, making it impossible to tell how much elemental zinc you're actually getting
