Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a legume native to the Mediterranean and South Asia, used for centuries in traditional medicine and cooking. Its seeds contain a range of bioactive compounds — most notably furostanolic saponins, including protodioscin — which are believed to support testosterone levels by inhibiting enzymes (aromatase and 5-alpha reductase) that convert testosterone into estrogen and DHT. The result is a shift toward higher free and total testosterone, rather than the body producing more testosterone from scratch.
The key caveat with fenugreek research is that most positive studies use proprietary standardized extracts — Testofen and Furosap being the most researched — rather than plain ground fenugreek seed powder. If you're using it for hormonal benefits, the extract type and standardization matter considerably. Culinary amounts of fenugreek in food are unlikely to produce the same effects seen in clinical trials using concentrated extracts at 500–600mg/day.
Free Testosterone Support
The most clinically supported use. Standardized extracts have shown meaningful increases in free testosterone in men, likely by inhibiting conversion pathways rather than stimulating new production.
Libido & Sexual Function
Multiple RCTs report improvements in sexual interest, arousal, and satisfaction in both men and women using fenugreek extract. Effects were observed in healthy individuals, not just those with clinical deficiencies.
Blood Sugar Management
Fenugreek's high soluble fiber content (4-hydroxyisoleucine in particular) slows glucose absorption and may improve insulin sensitivity. This is one of the more consistent findings across both traditional use and modern research.
Milk Production Support
Long used traditionally to support breast milk production in nursing mothers. Some small clinical studies support this use, though evidence is less robust than for testosterone and blood sugar effects.
- Look for extracts standardized to furostanolic saponins or protodioscin — not just plain seed powder
- Fenugreek has a distinct maple-syrup odor that can transfer to sweat and urine — completely harmless but worth knowing
- If you're on blood sugar medication, monitor levels closely — fenugreek has real glucose-lowering activity
- Avoid during pregnancy — fenugreek has uterine-stimulating properties at high doses
A 12-week randomized trial in 50 healthy men (ages 35–65) using 500mg/day of Furosap, a protodioscin-enriched fenugreek extract, found that free testosterone increased approximately 1.47-fold (p=0.0004) compared to baseline. Sperm morphology improved in 85.4% of participants. Markers of mood, mental alertness, and sexual function also improved significantly. Liver, kidney, and lipid profiles remained unchanged, supporting a favorable safety profile at this dose and duration.
