Overview

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, making up about 30% of total protein content. It provides structure and strength to skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. As we age, natural collagen production declines, which is why supplementation has become popular for skin, joint, and hair health.

Most supplements use hydrolyzed collagen peptides (broken down into smaller, more absorbable pieces) from bovine, marine, or chicken sources. Type I is best for skin, Type II for joints, and Type III for skin and blood vessels.

Which Form Should You Actually Buy?

Beyond bovine vs. marine vs. chicken sourcing, there are two genuinely different collagen products on the shelf that get marketed almost identically — and they aren't interchangeable.

Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides — the standard choice

This is what most powders and drinks sold for skin and general joint support contain — collagen broken down into small peptides for absorption, taken at 10-20g/day. It works by supplying amino acid building blocks (particularly glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) that support your body's own collagen production. Gelatin is nutritionally similar but not hydrolyzed, so it doesn't dissolve in cold liquid the same way.

UC-II (Undenatured Type II Collagen) — a different mechanism entirely

UC-II is not a smaller dose of the same thing — it works completely differently. Taken at just 40mg/day (not grams), it relies on the collagen staying in its intact, undenatured triple-helix form so it can interact with immune tissue in the gut and help modulate joint inflammation. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found 40mg/day improved knee joint comfort after exercise. If a joint-specific product lists only a few milligrams of collagen, this is almost certainly what it is — not an underdosed version of regular hydrolyzed collagen.

Who should be cautious with collagen

If you have a fish allergy, avoid marine (fish-derived) collagen — hydrolyzing it doesn't reliably remove the allergenic proteins. If your allergy is specifically to shellfish, marine collagen is usually fine since it comes from fin fish rather than shellfish, but cross-contamination during manufacturing is a real risk — bovine collagen is the safer default if you're unsure.

Watch dosing on gummies specifically: our own analysis of the collagen research found the clinically studied range is 2.5-10g/day, while typical gummy servings deliver only a fraction of that — you'd need many gummies a day to hit an effective dose. A powder or drink mix is a far more practical way to actually reach the studied amount.

  • The specific source (bovine, marine, chicken) disclosed, especially important if you have allergy concerns
  • Third-party testing, particularly for marine-sourced products given general concerns about ocean contaminants

Red flags

  • Gummies or low-dose formats that can't realistically deliver the studied 2.5-10g/day range
  • A "joint support" product with only a few milligrams of collagen, marketed as if it's the same thing as full-dose hydrolyzed collagen (it's likely UC-II, a different product entirely — not a scam, just a different mechanism that shouldn't be confused with underdosed peptides)
  • No disclosed source (bovine/marine/chicken) — a real problem if you have any relevant allergy
  • Marketing claims implying collagen supplements directly "replace" your body's collagen, rather than supplying building blocks for your own production
