The front of a bottle is marketing. The back is information — if you know how to read it. This is the complete reference guide to every section of a supplement label, every marketing claim, and every red flag to watch for.

The Supplement Facts panel is required by the FDA on every dietary supplement sold in the US. Unlike the Nutrition Facts panel on food, supplement labels have more flexibility — which is where most consumer confusion (and manufacturer exploitation) happens.
✅ Serving Size
Always check this first. Some brands list impressive numbers per serving but make the "serving" unrealistically large. Calculate cost per day at the actual therapeutic dose — not just the label's serving size.
✅ "as Glycinate" / "as Bisglycinate"
The form in parentheses is the most important detail on the label. Magnesium "as Glycinate" = high absorption. Magnesium "as Oxide" = 4% absorption. Always check the form, not just the milligrams.
⚠️ % Daily Value
% DV is based on government reference values — many of which are set at deficiency-prevention levels, not optimal health levels. A supplement at 71% DV may still be a therapeutic dose. Don't use % DV alone to judge a supplement.
⚠️ Other Ingredients
These are binders, fillers, and capsule materials. Most are harmless. Watch for: artificial colors, titanium dioxide, or ingredients you're allergic to. "Vegetable capsule" (HPMC) is preferable to gelatin if you're vegan.
🚨 What's Wrong Here
The blend total is 5,000mg — but you have no idea how much of each ingredient is in it. L-Citrulline requires 6,000–8,000mg to work. If this blend has 4,800mg of cheap filler and 200mg of L-Citrulline, you'll never know.
🚨 Why Brands Use Them
They hide underdosing behind impressive ingredient lists. Listing 8 clinically-validated ingredients at ineffective doses looks like a premium product. It almost never is. A proprietary blend is almost always a reason to look elsewhere.
Protein powders, meal replacements, greens powders, and some other supplements carry a Nutrition Facts panel instead of — or in addition to — a Supplement Facts panel. Here's how to read it without being misled.
🚨 The Serving Size Trick
Many protein powders list their macros per a small serving (e.g., 25g) when most people use a full scoop (35–40g). Always calculate what you actually consume per use, not just what's on the label per serving.
🚨 Added Sugars — Watch This Number
Added sugars are now broken out separately from total sugars. For a "health" product like a protein powder or greens supplement, added sugars should be near zero. More than 5g per serving in a supplement is a red flag.
⚠️ Protein Quality Not Shown
The label shows protein grams but not protein quality. Whey isolate, pea protein, and collagen all show the same gram count — but collagen is missing essential amino acids and shouldn't be your primary protein source. Check the ingredient list for the protein source.
✅ Sodium — Often Overlooked
Some protein powders and greens supplements are surprisingly high in sodium. If you're stacking multiple products, sodium can add up quickly. Check this on every supplement you take daily.
After nearly three decades in the supplement industry, I've seen every marketing phrase in existence. Most are designed to create an impression — not to convey factual information. Here's what they actually mean:

Tests for 270+ substances banned in competitive sports including stimulants, steroids, and masking agents. The most rigorous certification for athletes, but also meaningful for anyone wanting the highest contamination assurance.

Informed Sport / LGC
Every batch tested for banned substances before release to market. Used by professional sports organizations worldwide. Particularly valued because it tests each production batch, not just a one-time certification.
Best for: Sports supplements, batch-level assurance
ConsumerLab.com
Independent organization that purchases and tests supplements off the shelf — not products submitted by manufacturers. Their testing has repeatedly found products with incorrect potency, contamination, or false label claims.
Best for: Independent verification, finding what's actually in popular products
Important: A product without any of these seals is not necessarily bad — many excellent companies don't pursue expensive certifications. But when choosing between two similar products, the one with third-party verification has meaningfully higher accountability.
Run through this checklist on any supplement before buying. One red flag doesn't necessarily mean the product is bad — but multiple flags together is a strong signal to look elsewhere.
