Electrolytes are minerals — primarily sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride — that carry an electric charge and are essential for nerve signaling, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. They're lost through sweat, and replacing them matters most when sweat losses are significant: prolonged exercise, hot-weather activity, or illness involving vomiting or diarrhea.
Electrolyte drink mixes have become one of the fastest-growing supplement categories, repositioned by brands from a niche athletic-recovery product into an everyday wellness habit. The honest picture is more limited than the marketing suggests: for someone eating a normal diet and going about an ordinary day, plain water is sufficient, and the research support for electrolyte supplementation is strongest specifically around sustained sweating, not routine sipping.

The American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on exercise and fluid replacement found little evidence of physiological or performance differences between a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink and plain water for exercise under an hour, but recommends adding sodium (0.5–0.7g per liter) for exercise beyond an hour to enhance fluid retention and reduce the risk of hyponatremia in those who drink excessive fluid volumes.
