Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is a simple mineral salt that's already circulating in your bloodstream -- it's the body's primary buffer against acid, produced continuously by the kidneys and pancreas. Taking it as a supplement is just a way to add a much larger, faster dose of that same buffer from the outside, and its two supplement uses both follow directly from that basic chemistry.
As an antacid, it reacts almost instantly with stomach acid to neutralize it -- fast, but short-lived. As an ergogenic aid ("soda loading"), a larger dose raises bicarbonate in the blood, giving muscle a bigger capacity to buffer the acid that builds up during hard, anaerobic exercise. It's one of the few "supplements" that's genuinely just a pantry staple with real, decades-old pharmacology behind both of its common uses.

Simple, Well-Understood Mechanism
Unlike many trending ingredients, there's no mystery here: it's basic acid-base chemistry, not a proprietary extract or an unproven pathway -- which is part of why it's held up as an ergogenic aid across decades of research.
- Take the exercise dose with a carbohydrate-containing meal -- consistently linked to fewer GI symptoms

The main limiting factor isn't efficacy -- it's tolerability: a 2026 systematic review found the most common dosing strategy (about 0.3 g/kg as a single dose) causes mild-to-severe GI symptoms for a meaningful share of users, with symptoms increasing with dose.
