Taurine is an amino acid (technically a sulfonic acid) found in particularly high concentrations in the heart, brain, retina, and skeletal muscle. Unlike most amino acids, it isn't used to build proteins — instead it plays standalone roles in cell volume regulation, calcium handling in muscle and heart cells, bile acid formation, and antioxidant defense.
It's classified as "conditionally essential" because the body can synthesize some taurine from cysteine and methionine, but dietary intake (primarily from meat, fish, and dairy) supplies a meaningful portion of what's used, particularly during illness, high physical stress, or in people eating plant-based diets.
Taurine is best known publicly as an energy drink ingredient, but that association is somewhat misleading — most of the actual research interest in taurine centers on cardiovascular health and exercise performance, not acute energy or focus, which in energy drinks comes mainly from caffeine.

Taurine helps regulate water and electrolyte balance within cells, particularly in muscle tissue, which is part of why it's been studied for exercise performance and cramping.

- Lithium: Some animal research suggests taurine may affect lithium levels; those on lithium should consult their doctor before supplementing.
- Energy drinks with high caffeine: Be mindful that commercial energy drinks combine taurine with high caffeine and sugar, which carries its own separate risks unrelated to taurine.
