Beta-sitosterol is the most abundant of a group of plant compounds called phytosterols, found naturally in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Structurally, it closely resembles cholesterol — close enough that it competes with dietary cholesterol for absorption in the gut, which is the basis for its most well-established use.
It's also one of the active compounds found in Saw Palmetto and other plants traditionally used for prostate and urinary support, and it has its own body of clinical research separate from those whole-plant extracts. Because it addresses two genuinely distinct concerns — cholesterol and urinary symptoms tied to an enlarged prostate — it's worth treating as two separate conversations rather than a single use case.
