Overview

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a small palm native to the southeastern United States. Its berries have been used for generations — first by Native American communities and later in European herbal medicine — as a tonic for urinary and reproductive health. Today, it's one of the most widely used natural ingredients for supporting prostate health and healthy urinary function in men, particularly as they get older.

The active compounds in Saw Palmetto are concentrated fatty acids and plant sterols extracted from the berry. Researchers believe these compounds may interact with the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) — a hormone closely linked to prostate enlargement and pattern hair loss. Quality extracts are standardized to a specific percentage of fatty acids to ensure a consistent, meaningful dose.

Potential Benefits

Prostate Health

The most studied use of Saw Palmetto. Often used by men to support normal prostate size and comfort as they age.

Urinary Flow & Comfort

May help support healthy urinary frequency and flow, especially for men noticing age-related changes in nighttime bathroom trips.

DHT Modulation

May help support a healthy balance of testosterone and DHT — the mechanism researchers believe underlies its effects on the prostate and hair.

Generally Well Tolerated

Saw Palmetto has a long history of use and is generally considered safe at recommended doses, with mild digestive upset being the most commonly reported issue.

Research Snapshot

Saw Palmetto is one of the most-studied botanicals for men's urinary and prostate health, with decades of clinical interest in Europe and the U.S. Research has focused on its potential role in supporting normal urinary frequency and comfort, and on its interaction with DHT metabolism. A 2023 Cochrane review of 27 randomized controlled trials in over 4,600 men found that Saw Palmetto alone provided little to no benefit for urinary symptoms compared to placebo. As with many botanical extracts, results vary across studies — extract quality and standardization appear to play a significant role in outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long until I notice a difference?
Most people give it at least 4–8 weeks of consistent daily use before evaluating results — this isn't a fast-acting supplement, and effects build gradually.
Is Saw Palmetto only for older men?
It's most commonly used by men over 40 for prostate and urinary support, but some also use it earlier for hair and hormone-related goals. As always, individual needs vary — a conversation with a physician is the best starting point.
Can women take Saw Palmetto?
It's used by some women for hormone-related hair concerns, but it's far less studied in women than in men. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid it and consult a healthcare provider before use.
