Pygeum (Pygeum africanum, also called African cherry or African plum) is an extract derived from the bark of an evergreen tree native to the mountainous regions of central and southern Africa. It has a long history of traditional use for urinary and reproductive health, and has been studied in Europe for decades as a botanical option for supporting men's prostate and bladder comfort.
The extract is rich in phytosterols, fatty acids, and pentacyclic terpenes — plant compounds that researchers believe may help support a healthy inflammatory response in prostate tissue and promote normal urinary function. Pygeum is frequently combined with Saw Palmetto in men's health formulas, since the two are thought to work through complementary mechanisms.
Traditionally used and studied for supporting normal prostate size and comfort, particularly in men over 40.
May help support healthy urinary frequency, flow, and bladder emptying — common concerns as men age.
Contains plant compounds studied for their potential to support a normal, healthy inflammatory response in prostate tissue.
Many men's prostate formulas combine the two, since they're believed to support urinary and prostate health through different pathways.
Pygeum has been used in European herbal medicine for decades and has a body of research — much of it from France and Germany — exploring its role in supporting normal urinary function and prostate comfort in aging men. A 2000 meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials in over 1,500 men found that Pygeum africanum produced modest but significant improvements in urinary symptoms, nocturia, and peak urine flow compared to placebo. Researchers have focused on its phytosterol and fatty-acid content as the likely source of its effects, and it's frequently studied alongside or in combination with Saw Palmetto.
