Hydroxytyrosol
One of the few antioxidants with an actual approved regulatory health claim
Hydroxytyrosol is a phenolic antioxidant found in olives, olive leaves, and extra virgin olive oil, formed partly as a breakdown product of oleuropein, the compound that gives unripe olives their characteristic bitterness. It's considered one of the most potent naturally occurring antioxidants for neutralizing free radicals and protecting LDL cholesterol particles from oxidative damage.
What sets hydroxytyrosol apart from most trending antioxidants is regulatory recognition: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has formally approved a health claim specifically for olive oil polyphenols including hydroxytyrosol — "contributes to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress" — based on human clinical evidence. That's a genuinely high bar most supplement ingredients never clear, and it's worth knowing exactly what the claim does and doesn't say.
LDL Oxidation Protection
The EFSA health claim is grounded in studies showing a dose-dependent reduction in oxidized LDL particles with hydroxytyrosol intake -- oxidized LDL, not LDL itself, is considered a more direct driver of arterial plaque formation.
Oxidative Stress Markers
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy adults found 3 weeks of hydroxytyrosol supplementation significantly increased antioxidant markers (total antioxidant status, SOD1) while reducing markers of oxidative damage (malondialdehyde).
Endothelial & Cardiovascular Markers
A randomized controlled trial in adults at cardiovascular risk found that ingredients that convert into hydroxytyrosol in the body improved endothelial function, HDL cholesterol, and inflammatory markers compared to control.
A Real Regulatory Bar
Unlike most antioxidant marketing claims, this one had to survive formal EFSA scientific review of the submitted human evidence before being legally approved for use on food labels in the EU.
- High-quality extra virgin olive oil is a real dietary source, but concentration varies enormously by variety and processing
- The "protects blood lipids from oxidative stress" claim is specific -- it doesn't mean it lowers LDL cholesterol itself
- Take with a meal containing some fat to support absorption
- Complements, doesn't replace, established cardiovascular pillars like omega-3, fiber, and exercise
A 2017 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial gave healthy volunteers 15mg/day of a hydroxytyrosol-based formulation for 3 weeks and found significant increases in antioxidant markers (total antioxidant status, superoxide dismutase) alongside significant reductions in oxidative damage markers (malondialdehyde, nitrite/nitrate) compared to placebo. Separately, a 2019 randomized controlled trial in adults with cardiovascular risk factors found that dietary tyrosol -- which the body partially converts into hydroxytyrosol -- improved endothelial function, HDL cholesterol, and vasodilatory and inflammatory markers. Both findings support the mechanistic basis for EFSA's approved "protects blood lipids from oxidative stress" claim.
