One of the things I watched happen thousands of times in my store was customers turning a bottle over, scanning the label for about three seconds, and then making their decision based on the front of the package. The name, the design, maybe a claim that said "maximum strength" or "clinically proven." That was the whole evaluation.
I understand why. Supplement labels are deliberately designed to be confusing — dense with numbers, percentages, Latin names, and fine print that nobody reads. But the information you need to actually evaluate a product is on that back label. Once you know what to look for, reading it takes less than a minute.
Here are the six things that matter, in the order you should check them.
Unlike prescription drugs, dietary supplements in the United States do not require FDA approval before they go to market. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products are safe and accurately labeled — but the FDA does not independently verify this before products reach store shelves. 1. Serving Size — The First Place Things Hide
Before you look at anything else, find the serving size. It's at the very top of the Supplement Facts panel, and it controls the meaning of every number that follows.
This is where manufacturers have some of their most effective tricks. A protein powder might list impressive numbers per serving — but the serving size is two scoops instead of one. A fish oil might show a seemingly adequate EPA+DHA count per softgel, but the recommended dose is three softgels daily, tripling what you'd assume from a quick glance.
Also check the servings per container alongside the serving size. A bottle priced at $30 that appears reasonable might contain only 20 days' worth of product at the clinically relevant dose. Price per serving — not price per bottle — is the only meaningful cost comparison between products.

- Magnesium glycinate: 500mg — Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bonded to glycine. The glycine molecule makes up most of the molecular weight. The actual elemental magnesium content of 500mg of magnesium glycinate is roughly 50–65mg — about one-tenth of what the label number suggests. The Supplement Facts panel should have a sub-line listing "Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate)" with the elemental amount. That's the number you compare against the evidence-based dose.

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed together under a single combined weight, with individual amounts hidden. You'll recognize it by names like "Performance Matrix," "Neuro Blend," "Immune Support Complex," or similar branded language followed by a total weight in milligrams.
The company can tell you the blend weighs 2,000mg and list ten ingredients inside it. They are not required to tell you how much of each ingredient is present. One of those ten ingredients could account for 1,900mg while the other nine total 100mg between them — and you'd have no way of knowing from the label.
The justification offered is formula protection from competitors. This doesn't hold up. Any contract laboratory can analyze a product and determine its composition. The actual effect of proprietary blends is to prevent consumers from knowing whether ingredients are dosed at levels that the research supports.
In practice, proprietary blends are almost always used to include impressive-sounding ingredients at sub-effective doses — enough to put them on the label, not enough to do what the label implies. The ingredients are real. The doses are not.
My rule, and the one I'd recommend to anyone: if a product uses a proprietary blend for any meaningful part of its formula, look for a competitor with full label transparency. They exist in every category. The willingness to show you exactly what you're getting — and how much — is the single most honest signal a supplement company can send.
4. % Daily Value — Useful Context, Not Gospel
The % Daily Value column on a supplement label tells you what percentage of the government's established daily reference amount for each nutrient is provided per serving. It's useful in some contexts and actively misleading in others.
Where %DV is genuinely useful: for fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E, and K — that accumulate in the body rather than being excreted when consumed in excess. Seeing 500% DV of vitamin A should prompt a closer look, because fat-soluble vitamins can reach toxic levels with chronic overconsumption. %DV helps flag potential excess for these nutrients.
Where %DV misleads: for water-soluble vitamins like B12 and vitamin C, seeing 1,000% or 5,000% DV is not alarming — excess is excreted in urine, and high doses are commonly used therapeutically. The headline percentage looks dramatic but carries little practical meaning for safety.
More fundamentally, the Daily Values themselves are often outdated relative to current research. The DV for vitamin D in many labeling systems is still set at 800 IU — a level that research has long suggested is inadequate for most adults to reach optimal blood levels. The DV for magnesium is 420mg, which doesn't account for the additional needs of active people who deplete magnesium through sweat. Treating %DV as the definitive guide to optimal intake means anchoring to numbers that may be 20 years behind the science.
Use %DV as a rough reference point and a flag for potential excess in fat-soluble vitamins. Don't use it as your primary guide to whether a dose is therapeutic.
5. Other Ingredients — What's Actually in the Capsule
The "Other Ingredients" section at the bottom of the Supplement Facts panel lists everything in the product that isn't an active ingredient: capsule material, fillers, flow agents, colorants, and flavoring. Most people ignore this entirely. It's worth a 10-second scan.
Common ingredients that are fine:
- Microcrystalline cellulose — a plant-derived filler used to add bulk to capsules. Inert and safe.
- Magnesium stearate — a flow agent that prevents ingredients from clumping during manufacturing. Present at very low levels; the concern about it inhibiting absorption has not been supported by the evidence at doses found in supplements.
- Silicon dioxide — another anti-caking agent. Inert at supplement doses.
- Rice flour — commonly used as a filler in capsules. Fine.
Things worth paying attention to:
- Artificial dyes (FD&C Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Blue No. 1) — not dangerous for most people but unnecessary in a supplement. Some individuals are sensitive to synthetic colorants. Their presence often indicates a product optimized for appearance over function.

- Gelatin capsules — derived from animal collagen. If you're vegan, vegetarian, or avoid pork or beef products for religious reasons, look for "vegetarian capsule" or "HPMC capsule" (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) instead. This distinction is rarely featured prominently on the front of the package.
- Added sugar — relevant primarily for gummy vitamins and flavored powders. Some products contain surprisingly high amounts — check if you're managing blood sugar or simply don't want your supplement to be a candy.
6. Third-Party Testing — The Only Real Quality Signal
Everything we've discussed so far involves reading what the manufacturer has chosen to tell you. The fundamental limitation is that supplement labels are self-reported. There is no pre-market verification system requiring manufacturers to prove that what's on the label is what's in the bottle.
Third-party testing closes that gap. Independent organizations test finished supplement products and verify that:
- The product contains the ingredients listed, in the amounts stated
- It doesn't contain ingredients that aren't listed (contaminants, adulterants, heavy metals)
- It's free from substances banned in sport (relevant for competitive athletes)
The certifications worth recognizing:
- NSF Certified for Sport — the gold standard for athletes in tested sports. Verifies label accuracy and screens for 270+ banned substances. Recognized by the NFL, MLB, NBA, and most major sports organizations.
- Informed Sport / Informed Choice — also screens for banned substances and verifies label accuracy. Widely recognized internationally and by professional sports bodies.
- USP Verified — verifies that the product contains the ingredients listed in the stated amounts, meets purity standards, and will dissolve properly for absorption. Does not screen for banned substances.

Before you even flip the bottle over, here are the phrases on the front that carry no regulatory weight and should contribute nothing to your decision:
- "Maximum strength" — no legal definition. Any product can use this.
- "Advanced formula" — means nothing. Marketing language with no regulatory standard.
- "Clinically proven" — almost always refers to evidence for one ingredient, at a dose that may differ from what's in the product, in a study that may have been funded by the manufacturer.
- "Doctor recommended" — frequently a paid arrangement. A meaningful claim would name the doctor, their credentials, and their relationship to the brand. Without those details, it's decoration.
- "All natural" — has no regulatory definition for supplements in the United States. Arsenic is natural. The word tells you nothing about safety, efficacy, or quality.
- "Pharmaceutical grade" — not a regulated term for supplements. Can be applied to any product without verification.
None of these phrases are illegal. None of them are informative. Train yourself to look past them entirely and go straight to the Supplement Facts panel.
The 60-Second Label Checklist
Put it all together and here's what a fast label evaluation looks like in practice:
- Serving size — How many capsules/scoops is one serving? How many days does the container last at the recommended dose?
- Active ingredient amounts — Does the label show the elemental or active form alongside the compound weight? Are the amounts in the range the research supports?
- Proprietary blends — Is anything listed as a blend with a combined weight? If yes, put it back.
- % Daily Value — Are any fat-soluble vitamins at very high percentages? (Flag for follow-up.) For water-soluble vitamins and minerals, use %DV as rough context only.
- Other ingredients — Any artificial dyes? Gelatin if that matters for your diet? Excessive added sugar?
- Certification logo — Is there an NSF, Informed Sport, or USP mark anywhere on the label or bottle?
That's it. Sixty seconds, maybe less once it becomes habit. You'll immediately be a more informed buyer than the majority of people standing next to you in the supplement aisle — and you'll stop paying for labels rather than products.
