HMB (β-Hydroxy β-Methylbutyrate) is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine. It is produced naturally in small amounts in the body when leucine is metabolized. HMB has been studied extensively for its potential to support muscle preservation, reduce muscle breakdown, and enhance exercise recovery.
HMB is particularly popular among athletes in calorie deficits (cutting phases), older adults, and people recovering from injury. It works through different mechanisms than creatine, making it a complementary supplement for muscle health.
May reduce muscle protein breakdown, especially during calorie restriction or intense training. Popular during cutting phases.
May reduce exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness. Some studies show faster recovery between training sessions.
When combined with resistance training, HMB may support gains in strength and lean muscle mass, especially in beginners or older adults.
HMB is very safe with an excellent safety profile. Most people tolerate it well with minimal side effects.
HMB has been studied extensively for its anti-catabolic (muscle-preserving) effects. The 2013 International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand concluded that HMB can attenuate exercise-induced muscle damage and support strength and muscle mass gains when combined with resistance training, with the most consistent benefits seen in untrained individuals and older adults.
| Ingredient | Best For | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| HMB | Muscle Preservation, Recovery | Reduces muscle breakdown; leucine metabolite |
| Creatine | Strength, Power, Muscle | Increases ATP stores; most researched for strength |
| BCAAs | Muscle Recovery, Endurance | Branched-chain amino acids; muscle protein synthesis |
HMB is often stacked with Creatine for comprehensive muscle support.
