Endurance & muscle buffering
Beta-Alanine is a non-essential amino acid that combines with histidine in the body to form carnosine, a dipeptide that acts as a buffer against acid buildup in muscles during high-intensity exercise. By increasing muscle carnosine levels, beta-alanine helps delay the onset of fatigue, allowing athletes to perform more reps, maintain higher power output, and train harder for longer.
Unlike creatine (which works on the phosphocreatine system), beta-alanine targets the lactic acid buffering system. It is one of the few supplements with strong evidence for improving performance in activities lasting 1–4 minutes (HIIT, sprinting, weightlifting, rowing, etc.). The most common side effect is a harmless tingling sensation (paresthesia) that usually subsides with continued use.

Beta-alanine is one of the most well-researched performance supplements. A 2012 meta-analysis of 15 studies found significant improvements in exercise capacity and performance, particularly in activities lasting 60–240 seconds. Muscle carnosine levels can increase by 40–80% with consistent supplementation.
