What's Mostly Filler

The rest of a typical pre-workout label tends to fall into a few familiar categories of things that sound impressive, cost the manufacturer almost nothing, and contribute little to what you're actually paying for.

BCAAs in a pre-workout. Branched-chain amino acids β€” leucine, isoleucine, valine β€” are sometimes included in pre-workouts to suggest muscle-preservation benefits. If you eat adequate protein throughout the day, you don't need BCAA supplementation. Your muscles have the amino acids they need. And even if you were BCAA-deficient, the amounts included in most pre-workouts β€” typically 2–5g β€” are small relative to what you'd get from a single meal. BCAAs on a pre-workout label is a cost-effective way to add words to the ingredient list.

Megadosed B vitamins. Many pre-workouts include B12 at 1,000% or more of the daily value, often alongside B6, niacin, and others. The implication is that these drive energy production. The five ingredients above β€” caffeine, citrulline, beta-alanine, creatine, and theanine β€” can all be purchased as unflavored powders or capsules from reputable manufacturers at a fraction of the cost of a branded pre-workout. Properly dosed from individual sources, you'll pay somewhere in the range of $0.50–$1.00 per serving for a stack that outperforms most $50–60 pre-workouts on the market.

The trade-off is convenience and flavor. Mixing five powders isn't as simple as scooping a single product, and unflavored citrulline and beta-alanine aren't particularly pleasant on their own. But if performance is the goal and you're willing to spend 90 seconds on preparation, it's the most cost-effective and transparent approach available.

At minimum β€” even if you want a pre-made product β€” this knowledge gives you a benchmark for evaluating what you're buying. You now know the doses to look for and what constitutes a label worth trusting.

What to Look for in a Pre-Made Product

If you prefer the convenience of a ready-made pre-workout, these are the non-negotiables:

Full label transparency. Every ingredient listed individually with its exact amount. No proprietary blends, no hidden matrices, no "energy complex" that doesn't itemize what's in it. This is a hard filter β€” don't compromise on it.

Citrulline dosed at 6g or above. This is the most commonly underdosed ingredient and the easiest one to check. If the label shows citrulline malate at 4g, that's roughly 2.7g of actual citrulline β€” well below the effective range. Look for 6g+ of L-citrulline specifically, not citrulline malate.

Caffeine amount clearly stated. You should know exactly how much caffeine you're consuming per serving. This matters for managing tolerance, avoiding sleep disruption from late-afternoon sessions, and stacking with other stimulants.

Reasonable serving size. If a product claims to deliver 10+ effective ingredients in a 7g scoop, something is being underdosed. Citrulline alone at an effective dose takes up 6g of that. Do the math.

Third-party testing certification. Look for NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or Informed Choice logos. These indicate the product has been independently tested to verify that what's on the label is what's in the product, and that it's free from banned substances. If you're competing in any tested sport, this is not optional.

One More Thing: Tolerance

The most common complaint I heard from long-term pre-workout users was that it "stopped working." The stimulant effect felt blunted, the energy wasn't there, and they were eyeing the double-scoop option.

This is almost entirely a caffeine tolerance issue. Your adenosine receptors up-regulate in response to chronic caffeine exposure β€” meaning you need more caffeine to achieve the same level of receptor blockade. The solution isn't a higher dose. It's cycling off caffeine periodically to allow receptor sensitivity to reset.

A 10–14 day caffeine break every 2–3 months β€” or even a simple reduction to one low-dose serving per day β€” is enough to meaningfully restore sensitivity. It's uncomfortable for the first few days. It's worth it. The alternative is a slow escalation of caffeine intake that produces diminishing returns and eventually contributes to the cycle of dependence that makes people feel they can't train without a pre-workout at all.

The best pre-workout is one you can take for years at a consistent, effective dose β€” not one you're chasing with ever-increasing amounts to recapture an effect that has quietly disappeared.
