Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract (GSE) is derived from the seeds of Vitis vinifera grapes and is one of the richest known dietary sources of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) — a class of polyphenolic antioxidants also found in pine bark, berries, and red wine. OPCs are considerably more potent as free radical scavengers than vitamins C and E individually, and they appear to work synergistically with both. Beyond antioxidant activity, GSE has documented effects on vascular tone, endothelial function, and nitric oxide availability, which explains its clinical evidence for blood pressure and circulation benefits.
Quality varies substantially between products. The relevant marker is OPC (or proanthocyanidin) standardization — typically expressed as a percentage of the extract. A product listing just "grape seed extract 300mg" without specifying OPC content may have very little active compound. Look for products standardized to at least 85–95% OPCs or proanthocyanidins. Pycnogenol (pine bark extract) is a closely related and often comparable product that targets similar pathways.
Blood Pressure Reduction
The most clinically supported use. A meta-analysis of 16 RCTs found significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with the strongest effects in younger adults and those with metabolic syndrome.
Circulation & Vascular Health
OPCs support endothelial function and nitric oxide production, improving blood vessel flexibility and reducing oxidative stress in the vasculature. Particularly relevant for people with prehypertension or metabolic syndrome.
Antioxidant Protection
OPCs are among the most potent plant-derived antioxidants known. They scavenge free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and help regenerate vitamins C and E — making GSE a strong addition to any antioxidant strategy.
Skin Health & Collagen Support
OPCs bind to collagen and elastin proteins, protecting them from enzymatic breakdown. Regular use is associated with improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and UV damage protection in some clinical studies.
- Always check for OPC or proanthocyanidin standardization on the label — unstandardized products may be inactive
- Take with vitamin C — OPCs and vitamin C recycle each other and work synergistically
- If you're on blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin), consult your doctor — GSE has mild antiplatelet activity
- Pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) targets similar pathways and is interchangeable for most uses
A meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials in 810 participants found that grape seed extract produced significant reductions in both systolic blood pressure (weighted mean difference: −6.1 mmHg; p=0.011) and diastolic blood pressure (−2.8 mmHg; p=0.001) compared to placebo. Benefits were most pronounced in younger subjects (under 50), obese individuals, and those with metabolic syndrome. The authors noted that the cardiovascular effects appear most meaningful in these higher-risk subgroups.
