Glucosamine is a natural compound found in cartilage — the tough tissue that cushions joints. Supplements are typically derived from shellfish shells or made synthetically. It is one of the most commonly used supplements for joint health and comfort.

Glucosamine is very safe for most people. Choose quality sources (glucosamine sulfate is most studied).
Multiple studies support glucosamine for joint comfort and function, particularly in people with osteoarthritis. The landmark 2006 GAIT trial found that glucosamine and chondroitin were not significantly better than placebo overall, but the combination may provide relief for patients with moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis pain. Results are mixed but generally positive for symptom relief when used consistently.
