Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan – a long-chain carbohydrate molecule – that occurs naturally throughout the human body, with the highest concentrations in skin, synovial fluid (joint lubricant), and the vitreous humor of the eye. It's one of the body's primary water-retaining molecules: a single gram of hyaluronic acid can bind up to six litres of water.
The body produces HA endogenously, but production declines significantly with age – by some estimates, the average 70-year-old has less than 25% of the HA levels of a young adult. This reduction is thought to contribute to joint stiffness, reduced skin elasticity and hydration, and slower wound healing.
HA is available in three forms: injectable (used clinically for osteoarthritis and as a dermal filler), topical (in skincare products), and oral (taken as a supplement). These forms work through meaningfully different mechanisms – understanding the difference is important before deciding what to take and why.
If your goal is joint health or systemic skin improvement, oral HA is the relevant route. If your goal is surface skin hydration and texture, topical is appropriate – but keep expectations realistic about what it can reach.
Not all hyaluronic acid supplements are equal. The molecular weight (MW) of HA significantly affects how much is absorbed from the gut and what effects it produces.
Best oral absorption. Can pass through the gut lining into circulation. Associated with anti-inflammatory effects and better systemic distribution. This is what to look for in an oral supplement.
Partial absorption. Found in many standard supplements. Some benefit likely, but less efficient than low MW formulations at comparable doses.
Poor oral absorption – too large to cross the gut wall effectively. Better suited to topical or injectable applications where absorption isn't required.
When choosing an oral HA supplement, look for products that specify low molecular weight (LMW) HA or use hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, as these indicate better bioavailability.
Injectable HA directly into joints (viscosupplementation) has stronger evidence for osteoarthritis pain relief than oral supplementation. If you have significant joint disease, discuss injection options with your doctor – oral HA is a reasonable complement but not a replacement for clinical treatment.
HA can be taken with or without food. There are no strong timing requirements. Consistency over 2–3 months is more important than the time of day it's taken. If you don't notice a meaningful difference in joint comfort or skin after 12 weeks of consistent use, it may not be the right solution for your specific situation.
Oral hyaluronic acid has an excellent safety record. It is endogenous – your body produces it naturally – and the supplemental form is generally extremely well tolerated. No significant adverse effects have been identified in clinical trials at standard supplemental doses.
HA plays a role in cell growth and division, and some research suggests that high HA environments may support the growth of certain cancer cell types. This is primarily relevant for injectable HA at therapeutic levels, but individuals with a history of cancer should consult their oncologist before supplementing. This is a precautionary note, not a confirmed risk at oral supplement doses.
