Ginkgo Biloba is one of the oldest living tree species, with a fossil record stretching back over 270 million years. Extracts from its leaves have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and are now among the most studied botanical supplements in modern science.
Standardized Ginkgo Biloba extract — most commonly the formulation EGb 761, standardized to 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones — has been the basis for the majority of clinical trials. These active compounds include flavonoids and ginkgolides, which contribute to its antioxidant and circulatory effects.
Research has focused primarily on cognitive function, memory, peripheral circulation, and age-related cognitive decline, with decades of trials, including large studies in older adults with mild cognitive impairment and dementia.
Improves Blood Flow
Ginkgolides in Ginkgo Biloba support vasodilation and improve microcirculation, increasing blood flow to the brain and peripheral tissues, which may support both cognitive function and circulatory comfort.
Antioxidant Neuroprotection

Timing
Take with food in divided doses (morning and evening). Most studies used consistent daily supplementation for 8–24 weeks before evaluating cognitive or circulatory outcomes — Ginkgo is not a fast-acting supplement.
⚠️ Important Interactions & Cautions
- Blood thinners: Ginkgo has mild antiplatelet activity and may increase bleeding risk with warfarin, aspirin, or other anticoagulant/antiplatelet medications.
- Upcoming surgery: Discontinue at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery due to bleeding risk.
- Seizure disorders: Rare case reports link Ginkgo to seizures, particularly in people with existing seizure disorders or on certain antidepressants.
- Raw seeds: Never consume raw Ginkgo seeds — they contain ginkgotoxin, which can cause seizures and is especially dangerous for children.
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Avoid — insufficient safety data and bleeding risk concerns.

The 2009 Cochrane systematic review by Birks and Grimley Evans analyzed 36 trials (totaling thousands of participants) and found that standardized Ginkgo Biloba extract (EGb 761, 120–240mg/day) produced modest improvements in cognitive function, activities of daily living, and global clinical assessment in people with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Effects were most consistent in trials of 24 weeks or longer. A separate 2013 Cochrane review confirmed modest improvements in pain-free walking distance in intermittent claudication. The evidence in healthy younger adults remains inconclusive — the strongest, most reproducible effects are in people already experiencing age-related cognitive or circulatory decline.
