L-Arginine
A nitric oxide precursor studied for blood pressure, blood flow, and exercise performance

L-Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid that serves as the direct precursor to nitric oxide (NO) in the body. Nitric oxide signals blood vessels to relax and widen, which is why arginine has been studied for blood pressure, blood flow, and cardiovascular markers. It's also a longtime fixture in pre-workout formulas, based on the idea that more nitric oxide means better blood flow ("the pump") to working muscles during exercise.
You'll commonly see arginine sold in two forms: plain L-Arginine, and AAKG (Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate), a salt form pairing arginine with alpha-ketoglutarate, an intermediate in energy metabolism. AAKG is marketed as having better absorption or added benefit from the alpha-ketoglutarate portion, but head-to-head human trials comparing the two forms directly are limited — most of the controlled research demonstrating benefit has used plain L-Arginine, often at gram-level doses.
One important caveat: oral L-Arginine has notoriously poor bioavailability due to extensive breakdown in the gut and liver before it reaches circulation. This is part of why citrulline (which converts to arginine indirectly and bypasses much of this first-pass metabolism) has gained popularity as an alternative — though arginine itself still shows measurable effects in trials, particularly on blood pressure.
Blood Pressure Support
The most consistently supported benefit, with dose-response data suggesting a meaningful reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Exercise Blood Flow ("The Pump")
Some research shows increased VO2 max and improved blood flow during exercise, though results across studies are mixed and depend heavily on dose and individual response.
Endothelial Function
Studied in people with cardiovascular or metabolic conditions, showing improvements in markers of how well blood vessels dilate and respond.
Cardiac Recovery Support
Investigated in patients recovering from cardiac procedures, with some trials showing reduced inflammatory markers — this is a clinical research context, not a general wellness claim.
- Doses above 9g/day haven't shown added benefit and increase risk of GI upset
- If gut discomfort is an issue, citrulline malate may be better tolerated and convert to arginine in the body
- Talk to your doctor before use if you take blood pressure medication or nitrates — combined effects can cause excessive drops in blood pressure
- Avoid if you have a history of herpes simplex virus, as arginine may promote viral replication in some individuals
A 2022 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis pooling 22 randomized controlled trials (30 effect sizes) found that L-Arginine supplementation produced significant decreases in systolic blood pressure (−6.40 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (−2.64 mmHg) compared to placebo. The blood-pressure-lowering effect on systolic readings became significant at a threshold of roughly 4g/day, independent of how long the trial ran, while doses above 9g/day showed diminishing returns.

Many pre-workout formulas combine arginine (or citrulline) with nitrate sources like beetroot to target nitric oxide through multiple pathways at once.
