Yohimbine

Yohimbine is a potent alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist that significantly raises blood pressure and heart rate in some individuals. People with cardiovascular disease, anxiety disorders, high blood pressure, or who take antidepressants (MAOIs in particular) should avoid it or consult a doctor first. It is not a casual fat burner supplement — approach it with the same caution you would any stimulant compound.
Yohimbine is an alkaloid extracted from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, native to West and Central Africa. It works as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist — meaning it blocks receptors that normally suppress fat release, particularly in stubborn fat deposits with high alpha-2 receptor density (inner thighs, lower abdomen, and hip region in women; lower back and abdominal region in men).
By blocking these receptors, yohimbine allows the body's natural fat-mobilizing signals (primarily norepinephrine) to work more efficiently. This mechanism is well understood and distinguishes yohimbine from most other "fat burners" that rely on thermogenesis alone. The effect is most pronounced during a fasted state or during exercise, when norepinephrine levels are already elevated.
Note: yohimbe (the bark) and yohimbine (the isolated alkaloid) are different. Yohimbine supplements contain standardized concentrations of the active alkaloid; yohimbe bark products have highly variable alkaloid content and inconsistent effects. Standardized yohimbine is what most research uses.
Fat Mobilization
Blocks alpha-2 receptors that suppress lipolysis, allowing norepinephrine to mobilize stored fat — especially effective in stubborn fat deposits with high alpha-2 receptor density.
Exercise-Enhanced Lipolysis
Most effective when taken pre-exercise in a fasted state. Exercise naturally elevates norepinephrine, and yohimbine amplifies its fat-releasing effect during this window.
Mild Stimulant Effect
Increases norepinephrine activity, which can improve energy and focus during training. Effects differ from caffeine — some people find it effective; others find the anxiety side effects outweigh the benefits.
Targeted Fat Loss Potential
The alpha-2 receptor mechanism may help address stubborn fat regions that respond poorly to diet and exercise alone — an area where most supplements offer nothing mechanistically relevant.
- Always start at the lowest dose — 2.5mg — and assess how your body responds before increasing
- Take in a fasted state for maximum effect — food blunts the mechanism significantly
- Do not combine with caffeine until you know how yohimbine affects you individually
- Avoid entirely if you have anxiety, high blood pressure, or take any prescription medications without doctor clearance
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 20 elite male soccer players found that yohimbine supplementation at 20mg/day for 21 days significantly reduced body fat percentage from 9.3% to 7.1% (p<0.05) — a 2.2% reduction compared to no significant change in the placebo group. Lean muscle mass, sprint performance, and strength were not negatively affected, suggesting the fat loss was body-composition specific.

Yohimbine is one of few compounds with a specific mechanism targeting stubborn fat — but its risk profile makes it unsuitable for many people.
