Yohimbine is a potent alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist that significantly raises blood pressure and heart rate in some individuals. People with cardiovascular disease, anxiety disorders, high blood pressure, or who take antidepressants (MAOIs in particular) should avoid it or consult a doctor first. It is not a casual fat burner supplement — approach it with the same caution you would any stimulant compound.

Overview

Yohimbine is an alkaloid extracted from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, native to West and Central Africa. It works as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist — meaning it blocks receptors that normally suppress fat release, particularly in stubborn fat deposits with high alpha-2 receptor density (inner thighs, lower abdomen, and hip region in women; lower back and abdominal region in men).

By blocking these receptors, yohimbine allows the body's natural fat-mobilizing signals (primarily norepinephrine) to work more efficiently. This mechanism is well understood and distinguishes yohimbine from most other "fat burners" that rely on thermogenesis alone. The effect is most pronounced during a fasted state or during exercise, when norepinephrine levels are already elevated.

Note: yohimbe (the bark) and yohimbine (the isolated alkaloid) are different. Yohimbine supplements contain standardized concentrations of the active alkaloid; yohimbe bark products have highly variable alkaloid content and inconsistent effects. Standardized yohimbine is what most research uses.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 20 elite male soccer players found that yohimbine supplementation at 20mg/day for 21 days significantly reduced body fat percentage from 9.3% to 7.1% (p<0.05) — a 2.2% reduction compared to no significant change in the placebo group. Lean muscle mass, sprint performance, and strength were not negatively affected, suggesting the fat loss was body-composition specific.

What is the difference between yohimbe and yohimbine?
Yohimbe is the tree bark; yohimbine is the specific alkaloid extracted from it. Bark products have highly variable alkaloid content — one product may have dramatically more or less active compound than another with no reliable way to tell from the label. Standardized yohimbine supplements specify the exact milligrams of yohimbine hydrochloride, making dosing predictable. Always choose standardized yohimbine over raw yohimbe bark.
Who should not take yohimbine?
People with high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, kidney or liver disease, or those taking MAOIs, antidepressants, stimulant medications, or blood pressure medications should avoid yohimbine or get explicit medical clearance first. The FDA has received adverse event reports including severe hypertension, rapid heart rate, and seizures associated with yohimbe/yohimbine products.
Why does yohimbine need to be taken fasted?
Eating causes insulin to rise. Elevated insulin directly counteracts yohimbine's fat-releasing mechanism by stimulating alpha-2 receptors — the opposite of what yohimbine does. Taking yohimbine with or after a meal significantly blunts its efficacy. The fasted, pre-exercise window is when it has the greatest fat-mobilizing effect.
Can women take yohimbine?
Yes, and some research suggests women may respond particularly well because stubborn fat in the hip, thigh, and lower abdominal regions tends to have high alpha-2 receptor density. The same safety precautions apply — start low, avoid if you have cardiovascular issues or anxiety, and don't take during pregnancy.
