L-Carnitine
The amino acid derivative that shuttles fat into your cells' energy furnaces
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative, synthesized in the body from lysine and methionine and found in highest concentrations in red meat. Its core job is transporting long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane, where they're broken down for energy — a rate-limiting step in fat metabolism.
While it's often marketed primarily as a fat-loss supplement, the research on that front is modest. Where L-Carnitine has more consistent supporting evidence is in exercise recovery — reducing markers of muscle damage and soreness after intense training — and in supporting healthy carnitine status in people with lower dietary intake, such as vegetarians and vegans.

A well-cited study found that L-Carnitine L-Tartrate supplementation reduced markers of muscle tissue damage and soreness following resistance exercise in a dose-dependent manner. A separate meta-analysis on body weight found statistically significant but modest reductions in body mass with L-Carnitine supplementation, more pronounced in overweight and older populations.
