Theobromine
The gentler stimulant from cocoa – smoother and longer-lasting than caffeine, without the jitters or crash.

Theobromine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found primarily in cacao beans – and by extension, in chocolate, cocoa powder, and to a lesser extent in tea and guarana. It belongs to the same methylxanthine family as caffeine, which means it works through similar mechanisms in the body, but with meaningfully different effects.
Most people have been consuming theobromine their whole lives through dark chocolate without realising it. A 100g bar of 85% dark chocolate contains approximately 600–900mg of theobromine. It's one of the primary reasons dark chocolate produces a distinct mood effect that regular milk chocolate doesn't – theobromine content scales directly with cocoa percentage.
In supplement form, theobromine is typically extracted from cocoa and sold as a standalone compound or included in pre-workout and nootropic formulations, often alongside caffeine.
These two compounds are closely related but behave quite differently in the body. Understanding the distinction is the main reason to consider theobromine specifically.

- • Tolerance develops rapidly
The practical upshot: theobromine provides a gentler, smoother energy effect that lasts longer. Many people who are sensitive to caffeine find theobromine a viable alternative or addition. When the two are stacked together, theobromine tends to smooth out caffeine's sharper edges – which is likely one reason the caffeine + theobromine combination in dark chocolate feels different from drinking straight coffee.
- Cardiovascular effects: Theobromine acts as a mild vasodilator, and studies have shown modest reductions in blood pressure. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that cocoa flavanols with theobromine content improved vascular function and reduced blood pressure in adults.
- Cognitive performance: A double-blind crossover study found that theobromine (alone and combined with caffeine) improved sustained attention, information processing, and working memory – with a notably calmer profile than caffeine alone.
- Mood enhancement: Theobromine appears to modulate serotonin and dopamine pathways, contributing to the well-documented mood-lifting effect of dark chocolate. Studies measuring subjective wellbeing after theobromine consumption consistently show positive effects.
- Bronchodilation: Used historically as a mild bronchodilator, and some research suggests it may be helpful for cough suppression – potentially superior to codeine in one study published in FASEB Journal.
Much of the theobromine research comes from cocoa studies where multiple compounds are present simultaneously. Isolating theobromine's specific contribution is methodologically difficult. The effects are real, but the research base is smaller than that of caffeine.
Because theobromine has a 6–10 hour half-life, single daily dosing is typically sufficient. Taking it in the morning is preferable for those sensitive to stimulants at night. When stacked with caffeine, theobromine is usually taken at a 2:1 ratio (e.g., 200mg theobromine + 100mg caffeine) to smooth the overall stimulant effect.
Theobromine is very well tolerated in humans at supplemental doses. Unlike caffeine, it does not significantly stimulate the central nervous system at normal doses, making it unlikely to cause jitteriness, anxiety, or sleep disruption when taken in the morning.
Toxic doses in humans are extremely high – estimated at 1,000 mg/kg bodyweight – making toxicity essentially impossible through normal supplementation or dark chocolate consumption. (Note: this is not the case for dogs and cats, who metabolise theobromine much more slowly – keep chocolate away from pets.)
Doses above 1,000mg in humans may cause nausea, sweating, or headache. Standard supplement doses (100–400mg) are well within the safe range for most adults. As with any stimulant compound, people with heart conditions should consult a physician first.
