Soy protein isolate is extracted from soybeans and processed to remove most of the fat, carbohydrate, and fiber, concentrating the protein to around 90% by weight. Among plant-based proteins, it stands out with the highest bioavailability score — close to whey concentrate — and a relatively complete amino acid profile, with only a mild gap in methionine.
Soy protein has also become one of the more controversial supplement ingredients due to its isoflavone content, which are classified as phytoestrogens — plant compounds that weakly interact with estrogen receptors. This has fueled long-running concern about testosterone suppression, though the actual research at typical supplementation doses tells a more measured story than the reputation suggests.
