Overview

Shilajit (pronounced shi-lah-jeet) is a sticky, tar-like substance that oozes from cracks in rocks in the Himalayas, Altai, Caucasus, and other mountain ranges. It forms over centuries through the slow decomposition of plant matter and microbial activity under pressure and temperature.

The primary active compounds are fulvic acid and humic acid – complex organic molecules that have demonstrated antioxidant properties and may enhance the transport of nutrients into cells. Shilajit also contains a broad spectrum of trace minerals and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, which appear to support mitochondrial function.

It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years as a "rasayana" – a rejuvenating compound. The modern research is catching up, though the trial sizes remain smaller than what we'd ideally want.

Potential Benefits
Most Supported Uses:
  • Testosterone support (men): A 2015 RCT in healthy men aged 45–55 showed 500 mg purified shilajit daily for 90 days significantly increased total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEA-S compared to placebo.
  • Mitochondrial function: Fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones have shown effects on CoQ10 activity and mitochondrial electron transport chain function in cell and animal studies.
  • Altitude adaptation: Traditional use and limited research suggest benefits for altitude sickness and oxygen utilization – potentially the origin of its high-altitude mountain harvesting connection.
  • Exercise recovery: A small trial found shilajit helped maintain muscle strength and reduced fatigue markers in men doing high-intensity exercise over 8 weeks.
Important Caveat on the Research

Most human trials on shilajit are small (under 100 participants) and some are industry-funded. The existing evidence is promising, not conclusive. The mechanism is plausible based on the chemistry of fulvic acid, but larger independent trials are still needed. This is a supplement where honest enthusiasm is warranted, but certainty is not.

The Quality Problem – This Matters More Than Usual

Shilajit is one of the most adulterated supplements on the market. Raw shilajit contains heavy metals, toxic fungi, and other contaminants that are dangerous without purification. Unprocessed or poorly processed shilajit is not safe to consume.

What to Look For in a Quality Product:
  • Purified and tested – Look for third-party heavy metal testing results (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium)
  • Standardized for fulvic acid content – typically 50–80% fulvic acid in quality extracts
  • Avoid suspicious "raw" products – legitimate raw shilajit requires significant purification before consumption
  • Choose resin or standardized extract over cheap powders of unclear origin

If a shilajit product is suspiciously cheap, that's often because it hasn't been properly purified. This is one of the few supplements where paying more for quality verification is genuinely important – not marketing.
