Probiotics are live microorganisms — primarily bacteria and some yeasts — that, when consumed in adequate amounts, provide a health benefit to the host. They work by colonizing the gut and supporting a healthy balance of the microbiome, the vast ecosystem of microorganisms that lives in your digestive tract.
One of the most important things we told customers in our physical store: not all probiotics are the same. The genus (e.g. Lactobacillus), species (e.g. rhamnosus), and strain (e.g. GG) all matter. A product with 50 billion CFU of unspecified organisms may be less effective than one with 5 billion CFU of a well-researched, clinically tested strain. Always buy by strain, not by CFU count.

Approximately 70% of the immune system is located in the gut. Certain probiotic strains have been shown to reduce the frequency and duration of upper respiratory infections.
Emerging research on the gut-brain axis suggests probiotics may support mood and reduce anxiety. The vagus nerve connects gut and brain, and the microbiome influences neurotransmitter production, including serotonin.
Antibiotics kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria. Taking probiotics during and after antibiotic treatment helps restore the microbiome faster and reduces the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Probiotic research is highly strain-specific. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG has among the strongest evidence for digestive health, with dozens of clinical trials. Saccharomyces boulardii has robust data for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, with a 2010 meta-analysis of 27 trials in over 5,000 patients finding it significantly reduced the risk of antibiotic-associated and traveler's diarrhea. The gut-brain axis is an active area of research, with several trials showing mood benefits from multi-strain formulas in people with IBS or high stress.
