Overview

Probiotics are live microorganisms — primarily bacteria and some yeasts — that, when consumed in adequate amounts, provide a health benefit to the host. They work by colonizing the gut and supporting a healthy balance of the microbiome, the vast ecosystem of microorganisms that lives in your digestive tract.

One of the most important things we told customers in our physical store: not all probiotics are the same. The genus (e.g. Lactobacillus), species (e.g. rhamnosus), and strain (e.g. GG) all matter. A product with 50 billion CFU of unspecified organisms may be less effective than one with 5 billion CFU of a well-researched, clinically tested strain. Always buy by strain, not by CFU count.

Well-studied for reducing diarrhea (antibiotic-associated and traveler's), improving IBS symptoms, and reducing bloating. Strain selection is critical for these outcomes.

Immune Function

Probiotic research is highly strain-specific. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG has among the strongest evidence for digestive health, with dozens of clinical trials. Saccharomyces boulardii has robust data for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, with a 2010 meta-analysis of 27 trials in over 5,000 patients finding it significantly reduced the risk of antibiotic-associated and traveler's diarrhea. Frequently Asked Questions
Does higher CFU count mean a better probiotic?
No. CFU count tells you how many bacteria are present, but it says nothing about which strains they are, whether they survive stomach acid, or whether they have been clinically tested. A product with 5 billion CFU of a well-studied strain is often far superior to one with 100 billion CFU of unnamed organisms.
Should I refrigerate my probiotics?
It depends on the product. Some strains require refrigeration, while others (especially spore-forming bacteria like Bacillus coagulans) are shelf-stable. Always follow the manufacturer's storage instructions. More expensive does not always mean refrigeration is necessary.
Can I take probiotics every day?
Yes. Daily use is safe and common for most healthy adults. Unlike vitamins, probiotics don't accumulate in a harmful way. Some people cycle them (e.g. 3 months on, 1 month off), but there is no strong evidence requiring this.
When should I take probiotics — morning or night?
Timing is less important than consistency. Taking them with or just before a meal provides some protection from stomach acid. The best time is simply whichever time you will remember to take them every day.
