Digestive enzymes are proteins produced naturally by the body — primarily in the pancreas, small intestine, and salivary glands — to break down the food you eat into smaller molecules that can be absorbed through the intestinal wall. Incomplete digestion of carbohydrates and proteins leads to fermentation by gut bacteria, producing gas. Enzymes like alpha-galactosidase (the active ingredient in Beano) break down these compounds before they reach the colon.

Digestive enzyme supplementation has the strongest evidence in clinical deficiency conditions (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, lactose intolerance, sucrase deficiency). A 2017 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy significantly improved fat and nitrogen absorption in patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, with a favorable safety profile. For healthy individuals, the evidence is more limited but practical — many people report significant reduction in bloating and post-meal discomfort. Bromelain from pineapple and papain from papaya have additional anti-inflammatory properties supported by multiple clinical studies.
