PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) is a small redox-active compound found in trace amounts in foods like kiwi, parsley, green peppers, and fermented soybeans (natto), and produced in small quantities by certain bacteria. It first drew scientific interest in the 1980s as a novel cofactor, and more recently has become a popular supplement marketed for cellular energy and "anti-aging" support.
What sets PQQ apart from most energy-focused supplements is its specific, well-documented role in animal research: stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis — the process by which cells generate new mitochondria. Since mitochondrial density and function decline with age, this mechanism has made PQQ a popular pairing with CoQ10, which supports the function of existing mitochondria rather than the creation of new ones.
Human research on PQQ is still considerably more limited than the animal literature, with most human trials being small. Timing
