Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is a key component of cell membranes, particularly concentrated in the brain. It plays an important role in cell signaling, neurotransmitter release, and maintaining healthy brain function.
PS levels naturally decline with age, and supplementation has been studied for its potential to support memory, cognitive function, and healthy stress response (including cortisol regulation).
Memory & Cognition
May support memory, especially in older adults. Some studies show benefits for cognitive function and mental clarity.
Stress & Cortisol
Research suggests phosphatidylserine may help support a healthy cortisol response during periods of stress.
Exercise Recovery
Some studies show benefits for reducing exercise-induced stress and supporting recovery in athletes.
Generally Well Tolerated
Phosphatidylserine is very safe with an excellent safety profile. Most people tolerate it well.
- Look for soy-free or sunflower-derived PS
- Can be stacked with Bacopa or Lion's Mane
- 300mg daily is common for stress support
- Effects on memory may take 4–6 weeks
Multiple studies support phosphatidylserine's benefits for memory in older adults and for reducing exercise-induced cortisol. A 2010 randomized controlled trial found that soybean-derived phosphatidylserine significantly improved delayed verbal recall in elderly adults with memory complaints, particularly those with lower baseline scores. It is one of the most researched phospholipids for brain health.
How Phosphatidylserine Compares
| Ingredient | Best For | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphatidylserine | Memory, Stress, Cortisol | Phospholipid; supports cell membranes |
| Bacopa Monnieri | Memory, Learning | Herb; effects build over 4–6 weeks |
| Lion's Mane | Cognitive function, NGF | Mushroom; supports nerve growth |
Phosphatidylserine pairs very well with Bacopa and Omega-3 for comprehensive brain support.
