Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is an essential nutrient your body needs to convert food into usable energy. It's a precursor to NAD+ and NADP+ — two coenzymes involved in hundreds of metabolic reactions, including cellular energy production and DNA repair, in nearly every cell in your body.
Beyond its role as an essential vitamin, niacin has long been studied at much higher doses for its effects on cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It's important to understand the difference between the small amounts needed for basic nutrition (easily met through diet and most multivitamins) and the much larger therapeutic doses sometimes used for lipid management — which carry real risks and should only be used under medical supervision.

Niacin is a building block for NAD+ and NADP+, coenzymes essential for converting carbohydrates, fats, and protein into cellular energy.
Cholesterol & Triglycerides
At pharmaceutical doses under medical supervision, niacin has a long history of use for raising HDL ("good") cholesterol and lowering triglycerides and LDL.
Skin & Circulation
The well-known "niacin flush" — a temporary warming and redness sensation — is caused by harmless dilation of blood vessels near the skin's surface.
Brain & Nervous System
As an NAD+ precursor, niacin supports cellular energy production in neurons and is being studied for its role in healthy aging.
- Niacinamide (a different form) doesn't cause flushing but also doesn't have the same lipid effects
- Take with food to reduce flush intensity and stomach upset
- Extended-release forms can carry higher liver risk than immediate-release at high doses
- Never start high-dose niacin without talking to a doctor first
Niacin has one of the longest research histories of any lipid-management supplement, with studies dating back to the 1950s showing significant effects on HDL and triglycerides at pharmaceutical doses. However, more recent large trials — including AIM-HIGH and HPS2-THRIVE — found that adding high-dose niacin to statin therapy didn't reduce cardiovascular events and increased side-effect risk, leading most cardiologists to use it more selectively today.
