MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil is a concentrated fat source made up of fatty acids with shorter carbon chains (typically 6–12 carbons) than the long-chain fatty acids found in most dietary fats. The two most studied and commonly used MCTs in supplements are caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), usually derived from coconut or palm kernel oil and concentrated through a process that separates out the long-chain fats.
What makes MCTs functionally different is how they're metabolized. Unlike long-chain fats, which require bile salts for digestion and are transported through the lymphatic system, MCTs are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and transported straight to the liver, where they're rapidly converted into ketones and usable energy — a much faster pathway than typical dietary fat.
This rapid ketone-producing property has made MCT oil especially popular among people following ketogenic diets, as well as those seeking a quick, sustained energy source without relying on carbohydrates.

MCTs are transported directly to the liver and rapidly oxidized into ketone bodies, providing the brain and muscles with an alternative fuel source — this is significantly faster than the body's normal process of producing ketones from stored body fat.

Timing
