Grapefruit Seed Extract
Marketed as a natural antimicrobial — but the actual research history and grapefruit's notorious drug interaction profile make this one of the more complicated supplements to recommend honestly.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), concentrated through an extraction process. It has been marketed since the 1970s as a natural antimicrobial, used in everything from supplement capsules to surface cleaning products and food preservation.
The research history here is genuinely complicated and worth understanding honestly. Several early studies found commercial GSE products effective against bacteria, fungi, and parasites in laboratory settings — but subsequent independent analyses discovered that many commercial GSE products were contaminated with synthetic antimicrobial preservatives (such as benzethonium chloride), and that purified, preservative-free grapefruit seed extract showed dramatically weaker antimicrobial activity on its own.
Separately — and arguably more important from a safety standpoint — grapefruit in all its forms, including seed extract, carries one of the most well-documented food-drug interaction profiles of any natural product.
Bioflavonoid & Antioxidant Content
Genuine grapefruit seed extract contains naringin, naringenin, and other citrus bioflavonoids with demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory studies, independent of the contested antimicrobial claims.
Inhibits Drug-Metabolizing Enzymes
Furanocoumarins in grapefruit (and its extracts) inhibit intestinal CYP3A4, an enzyme responsible for breaking down a large share of common medications — this is the mechanism behind grapefruit's notorious drug interactions.
Contested Antimicrobial Mechanism
Purified GSE's own antimicrobial activity, independent of preservative contamination, is weaker and less consistent in controlled studies than the original commercial-product research suggested.

This is the headline claim, and it's genuinely disputed. Independent analyses (including a notable 1999 investigation) found that the antimicrobial effect in many commercial products traced back to synthetic preservative contamination rather than the grapefruit extract itself.
Choose products that explicitly disclose third-party testing for preservative contamination
Antioxidant Bioflavonoid Support
Independent of the antimicrobial controversy, GSE's bioflavonoid content (naringin, naringenin) has documented antioxidant activity in laboratory research, contributing to general cellular antioxidant support.
A more modest but better-supported claim than the antimicrobial marketing
Topical & Surface Use
GSE is widely used in diluted topical and household cleaning formulations, where its mild astringent and bioflavonoid properties are generally considered useful, separate from internal supplementation claims.
Different use case than oral supplementation; less controversial here
Digestive Support (Traditional)
Some traditional use describes GSE for general digestive comfort, though this is poorly supported by modern controlled human research and should be considered anecdotal.

Timing
Take with food to reduce the chance of GI upset. Given the drug interaction profile, timing relative to medications doesn't eliminate the risk — separation in timing does not reliably prevent CYP3A4 interactions, which can persist for 24+ hours.

- Statins: Can raise blood levels of certain statins (like simvastatin and atorvastatin) significantly, increasing risk of muscle damage.
- Calcium channel blockers: May increase blood pressure medication levels, raising risk of excessive blood pressure drops.
- Immunosuppressants: Can raise levels of drugs like cyclosporine and tacrolimus to potentially toxic levels.
- Many other medications: The grapefruit interaction list includes dozens of drugs across multiple categories — always check with a pharmacist before using any grapefruit-derived product if you take prescription medication.
