Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in a small coastal region of Calabria, Italy -- most people already know its flavor, since bergamot peel oil is what gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive citrus note. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 237 patients with combined hyperlipidemia tested bergamot polyphenolic fraction at 500 and 1,000 mg/day for 30 days. The 500 mg/day group saw total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides drop by roughly 22%, 24%, and 30% respectively versus placebo, with HDL cholesterol rising. A separate double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial using a lecithin-formulated version of the extract confirmed both lipid and blood glucose improvements, supporting the effect across different delivery forms.
