Amino acids are the building blocks of every protein in your body — muscle fibres, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and structural tissue all depend on them. Of the 20 amino acids used in human protein synthesis, 9 are classified as essential: the body cannot synthesize them, so they must come from food or supplements.
The 9 essential amino acids are:
The green cells are the 3 BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) — the subset that became popular as standalone supplements. The remaining 6 (blue) are equally essential for completing muscle protein synthesis, and this is the core argument for EAA supplements over BCAA supplements.
BCAAs — particularly leucine — activate mTORC1, the cellular signalling pathway that triggers muscle protein synthesis (MPS). This is why BCAA supplements show a clear signal for recovery and reduced soreness in studies. But here's the catch: activating the MPS signal doesn't complete protein synthesis. Building new muscle protein requires all 9 essential amino acids as raw materials. If you supplement only BCAAs, you're pressing the "build" button without supplying the bricks.
Research by Wolfe (2017) summarising the literature concluded that BCAAs alone produce only a modest, transient MPS response — and that a complete EAA formula produces significantly greater net muscle protein synthesis. When all 9 EAAs are present, the signal (from leucine) and the substrate (from all 9) align, producing a complete and sustained anabolic response.

Athletes & Active Individuals
Anyone training in a fasted state (early morning workouts before breakfast) is the ideal EAA user. In the fasted state, blood amino acid levels are low — an EAA drink intra-workout provides the complete amino acid pool needed to maximise MPS during the session without the caloric burden of a full protein shake. Also useful during prolonged sessions (>90 min) where muscle breakdown risk increases.
Vegans & Vegetarians
Plant proteins are typically "incomplete" — they contain all 9 EAAs, but often with limiting amino acids (lysine in grains, methionine in legumes). While food combining addresses this, EAA supplements provide a reliable, concentrated complete profile that's particularly useful around training. Rice/pea protein blends partially solve this, but a standalone EAA product is simpler and faster-absorbing.
Older Adults (50+)
Anabolic resistance — where the muscle protein synthesis response to a given dose of protein diminishes with age — is one of the primary mechanisms behind age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia). Research by Katsanos et al. (2006) showed that older adults require a higher proportion of leucine in their EAA intake to achieve the same MPS response as younger people. EAA formulas with leucine-enriched profiles (≥3g leucine per serving) are particularly valuable for this population.
Those in a Calorie Deficit
During aggressive calorie restriction (cutting phases in bodybuilding, or anyone on a calorie-reduced diet), the risk of muscle catabolism increases significantly. EAA supplements — which are very low in calories (typically 50–80 kcal per serving) — provide the amino acid substrate needed to preserve lean mass without meaningfully affecting the calorie deficit. They're an efficient anti-catabolic tool.
What to look for when buying an EAA product:
- All 9 EAAs listed — not just 7 or 8
- Leucine ≥2.5g per serving
- Individual amino acid amounts disclosed (not "EAA blend 10g")
- Fermentation-derived or pharmaceutical-grade amino acids preferred
- No proprietary blends that hide amino acid ratios

For most people who consume adequate protein post-workout, EAAs provide the most value as an intra-workout supplement — when a full protein shake isn't practical but amino acid delivery matters.
A foundational 1999 study by Tipton et al. (Am J Physiol) demonstrated that essential amino acids alone — without non-essential amino acids — are sufficient to produce a robust net positive muscle protein synthesis response after resistance exercise. Crucially, the addition of non-essential amino acids provided no additional benefit, establishing EAAs as the active fraction for muscle building. Wolfe's 2017 review in JISSN crystallised the argument: BCAAs alone produce a modest, transient MPS signal, whereas EAAs produce a complete and sustained response because they supply both the stimulus (leucine) and the substrate (all 9). Katsanos et al. (2006) showed that older adults require ≥41% leucine within the EAA dose to achieve MPS levels comparable to younger adults — a finding with direct implications for EAA product formulation for the 50+ market.
Generally very safe:
- Free-form amino acids have an excellent long-term safety record
- No established upper limit for typical supplement doses (10–15g)
- Well tolerated even on an empty stomach in most people
Specific cautions:
- Phenylketonuria (PKU): Phenylalanine is one of the 9 EAAs — people with PKU must avoid or severely restrict phenylalanine. EAA supplements are contraindicated without medical supervision in PKU.
- Kidney disease: Individuals with impaired kidney function should consult their physician before significantly increasing amino acid intake.
- Very high methionine doses over long periods have theoretical concerns (homocysteine elevation); standard EAA supplement doses do not approach this threshold.
