The absorption booster behind "with BioPerine" on so many labels — and why it works for some ingredients, not all
Black pepper extract is a concentrated source of piperine, the alkaloid compound responsible for black pepper's characteristic pungency — and for a well-documented effect on how the body absorbs certain other compounds. It doesn't provide nutritional value on its own; its role in a supplement is purely to help the body absorb more of whatever it's paired with.
Piperine works by temporarily inhibiting two of the body's main "clearance" systems: the CYP3A4 liver enzyme, which rapidly breaks down certain compounds during first-pass metabolism, and P-glycoprotein, an intestinal pump that actively ejects absorbed molecules back into the gut before they can reach circulation.
