Astragalus
A traditional root studied for immune balance and resilience
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), also known as huang qi, is a root that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years, often as part of multi-herb formulas intended to support general vitality and resilience. Modern research has focused on its polysaccharides (including astragalan) and other compounds, which appear to interact with cells of the immune system rather than simply "stimulating" immunity in a blanket sense.
Traditionally prepared as a root decoction or added to soups and broths, astragalus is also available today as standardized extracts in capsule or tablet form. Much of the modern clinical interest has centered on how astragalus may help the body maintain immune balance during periods of physical stress, such as intensive exercise training or seasonal changes.

A 2021 randomized controlled trial in 18 members of the Polish national rowing team found that 500mg/day of standardized astragalus root extract during a six-week intensive training camp helped sustain natural killer (NK) cell and regulatory T cell (Treg) levels at baseline, while these declined in the placebo group. The researchers concluded the extract helped preserve immune balance during a period of strenuous physical stress that typically suppresses immune function.
