Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays a critical role in energy metabolism, red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and nervous system function. It is unique among vitamins because it contains cobalt and is the only vitamin that contains a metal ion.
B12 is naturally found in animal products (meat, fish, eggs, dairy) and is often deficient in people following plant-based diets. It is available in several supplemental forms, with methylcobalamin (active form) and cyanocobalamin (synthetic form) being the most common. Deficiency can lead to fatigue, neurological issues, and anemia.
Essential cofactor in converting food into cellular energy. Deficiency is strongly linked to fatigue and low energy.
Critical for myelin sheath formation and nerve function. Supports cognitive health and may help prevent neurological issues.
Essential for producing healthy red blood cells. Deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia.
Vitamin B12 is very safe with an excellent safety profile. Excess is excreted in urine. Some people may experience mild digestive upset.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is well-documented and linked to fatigue, neurological issues, and anemia. Supplementation is highly effective at correcting deficiency and supporting energy metabolism. A 2017 clinical review confirmed its critical role in red blood cell formation and nervous system health, and found that high-dose oral B12 is as effective as injections for correcting deficiency.
