Europe's most widely used herbal sleep aid — not a sedative, not a sleeping pill, but a gentle GABA modulator with a genuine evidence base for improving sleep quality when used correctly.

Overview

Valeriana officinalis is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and Asia. Its root has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years — the ancient Greeks and Romans used it for insomnia and nervousness, and it remains the most widely sold herbal sleep supplement in Europe today. Unlike pharmaceutical sleep aids, valerian does not cause sedation in the same way. Instead, it works by modulating the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter system — GABA.

The key bioactive compound is valerenic acid, which has been shown to inhibit the enzyme GABA transaminase (the enzyme that breaks down GABA) and to act as a partial agonist at GABA-A receptors. The net effect is a gentle increase in GABAergic tone — reducing neural excitability in a way that promotes relaxation and facilitates sleep onset without causing the dependency, rebound insomnia, or morning grogginess associated with benzodiazepines.

Other relevant compounds include isovaleric acid, isovaltrate and related valepotriates (iridoids with mild sedative properties), and the amino acid glutamine — which crosses the blood-brain barrier and may be converted to GABA. The full effect likely involves multiple compounds working synergistically, which is why isolated valerenic acid supplements don't replicate whole-root extract effects.

Why Valerian Is Not a Sleeping Pill
The Most Common Mistake With Valerian

Most people try valerian once, don't feel knocked out, and conclude it doesn't work. This is the wrong model. Valerian is not a sedative — it won't make you feel drowsy 30 minutes after taking it. It modulates GABA activity over time, improving the quality and architecture of sleep rather than forcing sedation. Many studies show valerian's strongest effects emerge after 2–4 weeks of nightly use. Taking it once and expecting an immediate effect sets you up for disappointment.

(American Journal of Medicine) reviewed 16 RCTs and found that valerian may improve sleep quality without producing side effects, with the strongest signal for subjective sleep improvement and reduced time to fall asleep. Effect sizes were modest but consistent across studies.
  • Menopausal sleep disruption: A 2011 RCT (Taavoni et al.) in post-menopausal women found significant improvement in sleep quality scores compared to placebo. Hormonal changes disrupt GABAergic sleep regulation, making valerian particularly relevant for this population.
  • Anxiety-related sleep disruption: Several trials show that valerian reduces subjective anxiety and rumination before bed — a common driver of sleep-onset insomnia. This is consistent with its GABA-modulating mechanism.
Limitations of the evidence

Polysomnographic (objective sleep architecture) data is inconsistent — valerian reliably improves how people feel about their sleep more than it changes measurable sleep stages. This is actually not unusual in sleep research — subjective sleep quality is considered a valid outcome. But it means valerian may be more effective for people whose primary complaint is "I don't feel rested" rather than clinically documented sleep disorders.

What to Look For on the Label
Standardised extract — 0.8% valerenic acid

This is the critical quality marker. Without standardisation, you have no way of knowing whether the active compounds are present at meaningful levels. Most high-quality products will state this on the label.

Valeriana officinalis (not other Valeriana species)

V. officinalis is the most researched species. Other species such as V. edulis or V. wallichii may have different phytochemical profiles and are not supported by the same evidence base.

Avoid proprietary "sleep blends" with undisclosed amounts

Many commercial sleep supplements list valerian as one of six or eight ingredients with no individual doses disclosed. You have no way of knowing whether the amount of valerian present is therapeutic. Choose single-ingredient or clearly dosed products.

Don't confuse with valerian teas — doses are too low

A cup of valerian tea typically delivers 20–50mg of root material — well below the therapeutic range of 300–600mg. Teas may produce a placebo or mild relaxation effect but are not equivalent to standardised capsules.

Take consistently for at least 2–4 weeks. Unlike melatonin, which can work on night one, valerian builds its effect over time as GABA receptor sensitivity adjusts. Don't evaluate it after a single dose — give it a full month before deciding whether it works for you.

Take 30–60 minutes before your intended sleep time. This gives the active compounds time to cross the blood-brain barrier and begin modulating GABA activity.

Discontinue gradually if using for extended periods. While valerian is not addictive, abrupt discontinuation after several months of daily use may cause temporary sleep disruption. Taper by reducing dose over 1–2 weeks.

Safety Profile & Precautions

Valerian has an excellent long-term safety record. At recommended doses, it is considered very safe for most adults. The main considerations are interactions with other substances and a small percentage of people who experience paradoxical stimulation.

Important Precautions
  • CNS depressants and alcohol: Valerian enhances GABAergic activity. Combining it with alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other sedating medications produces additive CNS depression. Avoid combining.
  • Pre-surgical use: Discontinue valerian at least two weeks before any surgery requiring general anaesthesia. Its CNS-depressant interactions can complicate anaesthetic management.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Safety data is insufficient. Some valepotriates have demonstrated cytotoxic effects in vitro. Avoid during pregnancy.
  • Paradoxical stimulation (~5–10% of people): A minority of users — particularly children and some adults — experience increased alertness, vivid dreams, or anxiety rather than sedation. If this happens, discontinue use.
Common Mild Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, upset stomach, and vivid dreams are occasionally reported, particularly at higher doses. These are generally mild and resolve with dose adjustment. The characteristic strong smell of valerian root is not a side effect — it's simply the nature of isovaleric acid.

Magnesium Glycinate — Synergistic GABA Support
Magnesium is a natural NMDA receptor antagonist and activates GABA-A receptors. It works through a complementary but distinct pathway to valerian — reducing neural excitability via a different mechanism. The combination is well tolerated and additive in effect. Magnesium also addresses a common nutritional gap that directly worsens sleep quality. This is the best companion for valerian.
L-Theanine — Relaxation Without Sedation
L-Theanine promotes alpha brain wave activity and relaxation via GABA modulation — similar direction to valerian but more focused on pre-sleep wind-down rather than sleep maintenance. A low dose of melatonin (0.5–1mg) combined with valerian can address both timing disruption and poor sleep quality. Do not use both at full sedating doses.
