Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a medicinal herb with a long history in European herbal medicine. A critical point many people miss: the root and the leaf have fundamentally different applications. The root (Urtica dioica radix) is primarily studied for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and its effects on sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The leaf is studied for allergic rhinitis and joint inflammation.
In our store, stinging nettle was one of the most commonly misunderstood supplements — customers would buy it for prostate support without realizing they needed the root extract, not the leaf. Know which part of the plant you are getting and why. The label should clearly say “root” or “leaf.”
Best for: prostate health (BPH), SHBG binding, hormone support. Mechanism: may inhibit 5α-reductase and bind to SHBG, reducing DHT activity. Dose: 300–600mg/day.
Best for: seasonal allergies, joint inflammation. Mechanism: inhibits histamine release and pro-inflammatory pathways. Dose: 600mg freeze-dried leaf 3x daily.
Prostate Health (BPH)
The root contains compounds that may inhibit 5α-reductase and bind SHBG, reducing DHT activity. Clinical trials show improvements in urinary flow, frequency, and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS).
Allergy Relief
Freeze-dried stinging nettle leaf has shown evidence for reducing seasonal allergy symptoms via histamine inhibition and anti-inflammatory effects. Works best taken proactively before allergy season.
Joint Support
The leaf has anti-inflammatory properties with some evidence for osteoarthritis support. Topical application (urtication) has shown pain-reducing effects in small studies, though oral evidence is more limited.
Blood Sugar Support
Preliminary evidence suggests stinging nettle may support healthy blood glucose levels, possibly via insulin-sensitizing effects. Evidence is early-stage and primarily from animal and small human studies.
- Know your form: root for prostate, leaf for allergies — these are not interchangeable
- Pairs well with saw palmetto for BPH — the most studied combination

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial by Safarinejad (2005) in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy found Urtica dioica root extract significantly improved International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and quality of life in men with BPH compared to placebo, with a good safety profile over 6 months. The stinging nettle root group saw meaningful reductions in urinary frequency and post-void residual volume.

For BPH, the combination of stinging nettle root + saw palmetto + pygeum is the most studied protocol.
