Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) is a flowering legume long used in traditional herbal medicine, now studied mainly for its isoflavone content -- plant compounds structurally similar to estrogen. Unlike soy, Red Clover's isoflavone profile is dominated by biochanin A and formononetin, which the body converts into genistein and daidzein.

It's one of the more rigorously studied menopause herbs, with 17 randomized controlled trials pooled in a 2021 meta-analysis. The honest summary: the effect on hot flashes is real but modest, and it depends heavily on getting the dose (generally 80mg/day or more of isoflavones) and duration (at least 12 weeks) right -- lower doses or shorter trials in the same body of research often showed no clear benefit.
