Overview

Lycopene is a bright red carotenoid pigment found most abundantly in tomatoes, along with watermelon, pink grapefruit, and guava. It's one of the most potent dietary antioxidants studied, and unlike most produce, cooked and processed tomato products (like tomato paste or sauce) often deliver more bioavailable lycopene than raw tomatoes, since heat and a small amount of fat help break down plant cell walls and improve absorption.

Most of the higher-quality clinical research on lycopene has focused on cardiovascular markers — particularly blood pressure, cholesterol, and endothelial function (how well blood vessels dilate). Doses studied typically range from 5–30mg per day for several weeks to a few months. Lycopene has also been studied for prostate health and as a supportive antioxidant during cancer therapy, though results in those areas are considerably more mixed and less consistent than the cardiovascular data.

As with most carotenoids, lycopene appears to work as part of an overall antioxidant-rich diet rather than as a standalone fix — the research is most convincing when it comes to modest, measurable shifts in cardiovascular markers, not dramatic transformations.

A 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis screened 1,189 publications and pooled 21 studies on tomato and lycopene supplementation. Lycopene supplementation alone was associated with a reduction in systolic blood pressure of 5.66 mmHg (p = 0.002). Tomato product interventions specifically were also linked to reduced LDL cholesterol (−0.22 mmol/L), improved flow-mediated dilation (+2.53%), and reduced the inflammatory marker IL-6 — supporting a broader positive effect on cardiovascular risk factors.

Generally yes. Heat processing breaks down plant cell walls and converts lycopene into a form your body absorbs more easily, which is why tomato paste and sauce often deliver more bioavailable lycopene than fresh, raw tomatoes.

This is one of the more popular claims, but the evidence is mixed. Some meta-analyses on PSA levels (a prostate marker) have found no significant difference between lycopene and control groups, so it shouldn't be relied on as a primary prostate health strategy.
