Inositol is a carbohydrate compound that is often grouped with B vitamins (sometimes called vitamin B8), though it is not technically a vitamin. It plays important roles in cell signaling, insulin sensitivity, and neurotransmitter function. The two most common supplemental forms are myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol.
Inositol has gained significant attention for its potential to support mood, insulin sensitivity, and symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is naturally found in many foods, including fruits, beans, grains, and nuts, but supplemental doses are often much higher than what is obtained from diet alone.
May support healthy mood and emotional well-being by influencing serotonin and other neurotransmitters. Often used for mild mood concerns.
May help improve insulin sensitivity and support healthy blood sugar metabolism. Particularly beneficial for those with PCOS.
Multiple studies show inositol (especially myo-inositol) may help support hormonal balance, ovulation, and other symptoms in women with PCOS.
Inositol is very safe with an excellent safety profile. Most people tolerate it well even at higher doses (up to 12g+ daily in studies).
Inositol (particularly myo-inositol) has been well-studied for PCOS, mood support, and insulin sensitivity. A 2017 meta-analysis of nine randomized controlled trials found that myo-inositol supplementation significantly reduced fasting insulin and improved insulin resistance in women with PCOS, with a modest reduction in elevated androgens. It is considered a safe and well-tolerated option for these applications.
