Glutathione is a small molecule made up of three amino acids — cysteine, glutamine, and glycine — and it's produced naturally in nearly every cell in your body. It's often called the body's "master antioxidant" because of the central role it plays in neutralizing free radicals, supporting the immune system, and assisting the liver in detoxification processes.
Here's the catch that most marketing glosses over: glutathione taken as a standard oral supplement is broken down by digestive enzymes before much of it ever reaches your bloodstream. This is why the conversation around glutathione supplementation is as much about form — liposomal, sublingual, acetylated, or precursor-based (like NAC) — as it is about the ingredient itself. Understanding that distinction is the difference between a product that does something and one that mostly passes through.

Glutathione is one of the most-studied molecules in human biochemistry — its role in antioxidant defense and detoxification is well established in the scientific literature. Where research gets more interesting for supplement users is bioavailability: a 2015 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that 6 months of oral glutathione supplementation (250–1,000 mg/day) significantly raised glutathione levels in blood cells, with the largest increases at the higher dose. This and other studies comparing oral, liposomal, and precursor-based approaches (like NAC) point to absorption and delivery method as a deciding factor in whether supplementation meaningfully raises cellular glutathione levels.
