Colostrum is the nutrient-dense fluid produced by mammals in the first 24–48 hours after giving birth, before regular milk production begins. It's exceptionally rich in immunoglobulins (antibodies), growth factors, and other bioactive proteins that support a newborn's developing immune system and gut lining. Supplemental colostrum is almost always sourced from dairy cows (bovine colostrum), collected during this early window without affecting the calf's supply.
Bovine colostrum has a notably similar composition to human colostrum, and decades of research — much of it in athletes and in clinical settings examining gut permeability — has examined its potential to support intestinal barrier integrity, immune function, and recovery from gut-stressing situations like intense exercise or NSAID use.
It's sold as a powder, capsule, or liquid concentrate, typically standardized to a percentage of immunoglobulin G (IgG) content.

A 2011 randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Physiology found that bovine colostrum supplementation (20g/day for 14 days) significantly reduced the exercise-induced increase in gut permeability in athletes compared to placebo.
