Chlorophyll
The green pigment behind every "green drink" trend — but the supplement you're actually taking is usually chlorophyllin, a lab-modified relative with its own distinct evidence base.
Chlorophyll is the green pigment that allows plants, algae, and cyanobacteria to capture light energy for photosynthesis. It's found in every leafy green vegetable and is responsible for the deep green color of spinach, kale, parsley, and wheatgrass.
Natural chlorophyll is fat-soluble and unstable, breaking down quickly and absorbing poorly when taken orally. For this reason, virtually all chlorophyll supplements — liquid drops, tablets, and "chlorophyll water" — actually contain chlorophyllin, a semi-synthetic derivative created by replacing chlorophyll's central magnesium atom with copper and sodium. Chlorophyllin is water-soluble, more stable, and the form used in essentially all of the clinical research on this ingredient.
This distinction matters: when you see "chlorophyll" marketed for detox, odor control, or antioxidant support, the evidence behind those claims is almost always chlorophyllin research, not studies on the chlorophyll molecule itself.
Internal Deodorant
The most clinically supported use. Small trials in people with fecal or urinary incontinence and colostomy patients found chlorophyllin tablets reduced stool and urine odor compared to placebo. This is a narrower, more specific benefit than general "body odor" marketing implies.
Carcinogen Binding
Laboratory and human biomarker studies suggest chlorophyllin can bind to aflatoxin (a carcinogenic mold toxin found in some grain and peanut crops) in the gut, reducing its absorption. This research is promising but mostly relevant to populations with high aflatoxin exposure, not general supplementation.
Antioxidant Activity
In vitro studies show chlorophyllin has free-radical scavenging properties. Clinical significance in humans taking standard supplement doses is not well established — most of this evidence comes from lab and animal models rather than human trials.
Topical Wound Care
Chlorophyllin ointments have a long history of use for minor wound healing and have shown some evidence for reducing wound odor and supporting healing in topical applications — distinct from oral supplementation.
There is no officially established dose — most products follow the ranges used in small clinical trials for odor control (around 100–300mg chlorophyllin daily). Take with food to reduce the chance of GI upset.

- Can turn stool dark green or black — harmless but can mimic GI bleeding on visual exam
- May cause mild GI upset, diarrhea, or cramping in some people
- May increase skin photosensitivity at high doses
- Limited safety data in pregnancy — consult a doctor first
