Brewer's Yeast
A byproduct of beer fermentation that turned out to be a dense source of B vitamins, chromium, and immune-supporting beta-glucans.
Brewer's yeast is Saccharomyces cerevisiae – the same species of yeast used to ferment beer and bread. After fermentation is complete, the yeast cells are collected, heat-killed (which inactivates them), dried, and processed into a nutritional supplement. The result is a concentrated whole-food powder that retains an impressive density of nutrients without any alcohol content or fermenting activity.
It's important to distinguish brewer's yeast from nutritional yeast (also S. cerevisiae, but grown specifically as food and often fortified with B12) and from active dry yeast used in baking. Brewer's yeast is the traditional supplement form – it tends to have a stronger, more bitter taste, but its nutrient profile is naturally occurring rather than added.
Despite its unassuming origins, brewer's yeast is genuinely nutrient-dense. A single tablespoon (about 8g) provides a meaningful fraction of daily B vitamin needs, along with chromium, selenium, protein, and beta-glucans – the same polysaccharides found in oats and mushrooms that have been linked to immune modulation and cholesterol support.

Brewer's yeast is one of the richest food sources of biologically active chromium – specifically chromium picolinate-like "glucose tolerance factor" (GTF) chromium. This form is thought to support insulin sensitivity and healthy blood glucose metabolism better than inorganic chromium supplements.
The cell wall of S. cerevisiae contains beta-1,3/1,6-glucans – polysaccharides that interact with immune receptors (especially Dectin-1 on macrophages and dendritic cells) and have been studied for immune modulation, anti-infective properties, and cholesterol support.
Brewer's yeast contains about 50% protein by dry weight with a reasonably complete amino acid profile. It's not a replacement for dietary protein but contributes meaningfully alongside a varied diet.
Provides selenium (an antioxidant mineral important for thyroid function and immune health), along with phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and zinc in modest amounts.
- Blood sugar support (chromium): Multiple randomised trials show that chromium supplementation – particularly GTF chromium from brewer's yeast – can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce fasting blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. Effects are modest but consistent. This is the most evidence-backed benefit of brewer's yeast supplementation.
- Immune modulation (beta-glucans): Beta-glucans from yeast cell walls are well-studied immune modulators. Research shows they can "prime" innate immune cells (macrophages, neutrophils, NK cells), improve response to upper respiratory infections, and may reduce the severity and duration of colds. The beta-glucan evidence as a category is robust; brewer's yeast is one delivery vehicle.
- B vitamin repletion: For people who under-consume B vitamins (common in restrictive diets, elderly individuals, and those who avoid animal products), brewer's yeast provides a meaningful food-matrix dose of multiple B vitamins simultaneously. The food-matrix delivery may enhance bioavailability compared to isolated synthetic supplements.
- Cholesterol (beta-glucans): Beta-glucans from various sources (oats, barley, yeast) have FDA-qualified health claims for reducing LDL cholesterol. Yeast beta-glucans follow a similar mechanism – binding bile acids in the gut and promoting their excretion. Effects require consistent intake over 4+ weeks.
Most individual studies on brewer's yeast use standardised extracts of specific components (chromium picolinate, beta-glucan extracts) rather than whole brewer's yeast powder. The dose and standardisation of active constituents in whole brewer's yeast products varies considerably between brands. Check labels for chromium content and whether the product specifies beta-glucan content if those benefits are your goal.
Start low and increase gradually. Some people experience bloating or gas when first adding brewer's yeast – starting with 1 teaspoon and building up over 1–2 weeks allows the gut to adjust.
Take with food. Reduces GI discomfort and improves absorption of chromium and B vitamins.
Taste note. Brewer's yeast has a distinctly bitter, malt-like flavour. Mixing into smoothies, soups, or savoury foods works better than stirring into water. Some people enjoy it; many don't. Capsules are a practical alternative for those who dislike the taste.
Brewer's yeast is generally safe for most healthy adults. It has a long history of use as a food supplement with a well-established safety profile. That said, a few considerations are worth knowing:
- Gout: Brewer's yeast is high in purines, which are metabolised to uric acid. People with gout or hyperuricaemia should use brewer's yeast cautiously or avoid it – high purine intake can trigger flares.
- MAO inhibitor (MAOI) medications: Brewer's yeast contains tyramine, which can interact dangerously with MAOI antidepressants, causing hypertensive crisis. Anyone taking MAOIs should avoid brewer's yeast entirely.
- Immunocompromised individuals: While beta-glucans modulate the immune system in healthy people, those with autoimmune conditions or on immunosuppressant therapy should consult their physician before supplementing, as immune stimulation may be contraindicated.
- Yeast sensitivity or Crohn's disease: Some people with Crohn's disease have antibodies to S. cerevisiae (ASCA antibodies) and may experience worsened symptoms. Anyone with IBD should discuss with their gastroenterologist before use.
Bloating, gas, and loose stools are the most common complaints, especially at higher doses or when first starting. These typically resolve with continued use or dose reduction. Starting low and building gradually prevents most GI complaints.
